What a stellar performance by weightlifter Hampton Morris. The 2021 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships kicked off on Oct. 5, 2021, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the USA’s presence is already felt. Morris competes in the 61-kilogram weight class and leveraged a youth world record clean & jerk into a youth world record total to stand atop the podium.

Morris entered the contest with the youth clean & jerk record already to his name. The 17-year-old scored the 155-kilogram (347.1-pound) lift at the 2021 Junior Pan-American Weightlifting Championships in Manizales, Colombia. He beat that lift in Jeddah by a single kilogram. It was enough to exceed Muhammad Faathir’s previous youth world record total of 273 kilograms (601.9 pounds) by three kilograms. Here are the stats from Morris’s performance:

2021 IWF Youth World Championships — Hampton Morris | 61 Kilograms

  • Snatch — 120 kilograms (264.6 pounds)
  • Clean & Jerk — 156 kilograms (343.9 pounds), IWF Youth World Record
  • Total — 276 kilograms (608.5 pounds), IWF Youth World Record

Kaan Kahriman of Turkey ranked second with a 264-kilogram (582-pound) total, and Herseleid Carrazco of Mexico totaled 263 kilograms (579.8 pounds) for the bronze. Check out Morris’ youth world record clean & jerk below, courtesy of USA Weightlifting’s (USAW) Instagram page:
