2023 Rogue Invitational CrossFit Event 7 “Hulk Hands” Results
The final day of the 2023 Rogue Invitational CrossFit dawned with cloudy skies and a slick field. The weather conditions led to some changes to Event 7, or “Hulk Hands.” Instead of the originally scheduled front-rack lunges, athletes would perform 20 stationary lunges with the event’s new implement, the Fatbells. By the end of the event, Laura Horvath and Dallin Pepper proved victorious.
With her event win and Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr’s fifth place event finish, Horvath came back from a five-point deficit and turned it into a 15-point lead on the overall leaderboard. With two events to go, the battle between Toomey-Orr and Horvath is only intensifying.

2023 Rogue Invitational CrossFit Event Seven — “Hulk Hands” Recap
The women took to the wet field first, with rain starting to pour down during Heat One.
Women’s Division, Heat One
Bethany Flores was the first to the brand new implements, the Fatbells, a circular take on the kettlebell with the handles inside. She handled the weight with grace, as did the other athletes who joined her, Emily Rolfe being the second.
Danielle Brandon was the first to get through her stationary lunges to make her way up the hill with the bag drag. Rolfe kept a consistent pace and followed Brandon. She and Rolfe alternated the lead back and forth, trailed by Arielle Loewen and Karin Freyova.

In a much-anticipated battle on the Echo bike, Brandon got to the bike just before Rolfe. Still, Rolfe managed to finish first for a heat win. Brandon crossed over the line soon after, followed by a foot race between Loewen and Flores. The rain kicked up into a proper downpour as the remaining women continued to battle it out on the bike, with Kyra Milligan closing out the heat under the time cap.
Women’s Division, Heat Two
Rain continued to pound down on the athletes as the leading women lined up to start their portion of the event. Laura Horvath, Gabriele Migala, and Emma Cary were the first off the bike to get to work on the Fatbells. Horvath was the first to get to the reverse lunges, but Toomey-Orr consistently crept her way up with steady work on the Fatbells.

Horvath took off across the field to get to the hill, just ahead of Migala. They were the first duo up and back from the hill, but Toomey-Orr had made her way up to third place in the heat, continually closing the distance between herself and Horvath. On the bikes, Alex Gazan creeped past Toomey-Orr for third just as Horvath jogged over the finish line for the event win, followed by Migala. In the end, Gazan was able to hold off Toomey-Orr for third in the event, with Cary also crossing the line just before Toomey.
Men’s Division, Heat One
The rain had abated somewhat by the time the men took the field, but it was still coming down. Jelle Hoste was the first off the bike, followed by Ricky Garard and Lazar Đukić. He made quick work of the Fatbells and the hill, the first to get back for his second round of Fatbell lifts, followed by Dallin Pepper.
Pepper, Hoste, and Garard battled it out for who would get to the bike first. Pepper ultimately made it back first, followed by Đukić, Hoste, and Garard. He crossed the finish line first, too, with Hoste and Garard getting over next.

Men’s Division, Heat Two
Once again, rain started falling heavier on the second heat. The men dismounted the bike more or less all at the same time. While most athletes chose to touch the Fatbells to the ground between their legs, Roman Khrennikov took the less conventional stance of dropping the bells outside his legs. It was working for him, as he paced well alongside Pat Vellner relatively rep for rep as they transitioned into the lunges.
Khrennikov broke out a big smile and a laugh as he all but sat down to hydroplane down the hill after his bag pull. Noah Ohlsen opted to do the same, much to the delight of the crowd.

But Krennikov was all business when he got back to the Fatbells, leading the pack with big sets of presses when it was time for more ground-to-overhead reps. He was the first to get back to the bike for his final 30 calories, picking up the heat win ahead of Jayson Hopper and Jeff Adler.
