The competition at the 2024 IPF World Classic Sub-Junior Championships from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8, 2024, in Valletta, Malta, was so immense that setting multiple IPF records did not guarantee a gold medal. In the Men’s 53KG Sub-Junior raw category, Luke Talley of Australia scored new IPF raw squat and bench press world records en route to a 496-kilogram total — a half-kilogram shy of winning the gold.

Talley opened his competition 208-kilogram squat at 52.25 kilograms bodyweight — a four-times bodyweight first attempt. He succeeded and called for a new IPF Sub-Junior world record of 220.5 kilograms on his second attempt. The lift was good, and he did not call it there. He attempted a 228-kilogram third attempt but missed.

Talley’s bench press performance was a clean progression of three successful attempts. He opened with 120.5 kilograms, moved up to 125.5 kilograms, and closed with a new IPF Sub-Junior world record of 130.5 kilograms.

Talley was bested on the podium by France’s Allan Duong Dinh Hy, who triumphed with a 496.5-kilogram total comprised of a 147.5-kilogram squat, a 102.5-kilogram bench press, and an IPF Sub-Junior world record 246.5-kilogram deadlift.

Talley weight eight-for-nine in attempts on contest day. His only blemish was his final bench press which would have added 7.5 kilograms to the IPF Sub-Junior world record he set on his previous attempt.
