If spring breakers aren’t leaving the country to catch some rays, they’re likely heading to Florida, specifically Miami. However, city officials hope to reshape the narrative and emphasize health and fitness by scheduling TYR Wodapalooza and HYROX to coincide with spring break weeks.
Remind me: The 2025 TYR Wodapalooza event was moved to Miami Beach this year to expand and attract more attention to this iconic CrossFit event. Next year, the event will occur from March 12 to 15.
- The increasingly popular fitness race, HYROX, will take place on April 19 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Spring break is the period when students are out of school. This break typically occurs between mid-March and mid-April, with most grade schools taking a week off, while colleges and universities generally offer a slightly longer vacation.
During this time, it is common for students to travel to warmer destinations, with Miami, known for its vibrant party scene, being one of the most favored spots.
Marco Sagrera, the chief strategy officer at Loud and Live, the owner of TYR Wodapalooza, noted that they had been considering the move to Miami Beach for some time, but the city of Miami Beach ultimately provided the final push.
- “Miami Beach already attracts visitors from around the world during spring break, and TYR WZA brings a dynamic, healthy-lifestyle, and fitness-focused energy into the mix,” Sagrera says in an interview with Morning Chalk Up.
The fitness festival has taken place at Bayfront Park in previous years, usually in late January or early February. However, 2026 will be the first year it shifts to March since its inception in 2012.
- “We see this as a win-win: the local community benefits from an influx of athletes and fans who are passionate about health, wellness, and competition, while TYR WZA gets to showcase the sport in one of the most vibrant and globally recognizable cities in the world. It’s a chance to redefine what spring in Miami Beach can look like—one that celebrates a healthy, fun, and fitness-oriented lifestyle,” Sagrera says.
The new location in Miami Beach is in the heart of the city and is now part of Miami’s vibrant party scene. Jason Woolley, the owner of CrossFit Miami Beach, mentioned that March is typically the busiest month for spring breakers, and he is eagerly looking forward to the later date for TYR Wodapalooza.
- “We partied in our days, but at a certain point, we’re just like, enough is enough,” Woolley told Morning Chalk Up, “People do it, but it only goes crazy this month.”
Woolley’s gym saw between 1200 and 1400 drop-ins during this year’s TYR Wodapalooza, a remarkable increase compared to previous years when the event took place in Bayfront Park. Community members and elite athletes visited his gym throughout the entire week leading up to and during the event. He modified his class schedule and added open gym hours to accommodate.
- “A lot of the local businesses and the people that I’ve talked to and have been present and walking around said it’s a huge plus. They want it [TYR Wodapalooza] to stay,” said Woolley.
The bottom line: Miami Beach may not undergo a complete transformation, but the efforts of government officials and local businesses to prioritize health and wellness provide a positive starting point.
