After exciting races this morning in “Albany Grip Trip,” a test of grip strength and gymnastics shoulder endurance, athletes across all divisions got a chance to lift some heavy barbells.
2025 CrossFit Games Event 5 — 1RM Back Squat
- 1-rep-max back squat
*The athletes get three lifts to get to their heaviest, using Rogue safety squat racks.
How it went down: Knowing he had to make a move to get into the final heat after some bad luck earlier in the weekend, Colten Mertens opened with an incredible 535 pounds on the bar.
There were three other men in the second heat to lift over 500 pounds, but Mertens was the star, finishing with an impressive 570 pounds. For those watching live, it looked like he could’ve lifted even more.
The final men’s heat came out to chase Mertens’ score, but none came close. In the end, seven men squatted 500 pounds or more.
After the event, Mike Arsenault asked Mertens how much he had left in the tank, to which Mertens replied:
- “I think I underestimated the bump I would get from the crowd. Five-seventy felt the same as 400 did in the back, so I’m not sure how much more I had in the tank, but it felt way better on the floor,” he said.
On the women’s side: It’s rare for fans to see a woman take the leader’s jersey from Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr in live competition.
- But after an incredible finish in IE04, Lucy Campbell stepped onto the competition floor to back squat, wearing the white shirt.
All eyes were on Anikha Greer as she confidently opened with an easy 325 pounds in the second heat.
Greer was aiming for 355 pounds, which would have beaten the high score set by Jennifer Muir in the first heat, but ultimately finished the event with the same number.
- Greer shook her head after her final lift, clearly knowing she could have added more.
Toomey-Orr entered the final heat aiming to regain her leader’s jersey and demonstrate that all of her Hyrox training hasn’t dulled her strength.
Spoiler alert, it hasn’t.
Toomey-Orr finished fourth in the event with a lift of 335 pounds and will wear the white jersey this evening, as Campbell struggled, missing her final squat, carding a 295-pound lift, and placing 23rd.
- Mirjam von Rohr won the event, lifting a smooth 360 pounds, making it look just as easy as Mertens did in the men’s division.
One last thing: Justin Medeiros is doing Justin Medeiros things, sneaking into fifth place in the event, finishing ahead of the four men who were ahead of him on the leaderboard going into it.
Buckle up, boys.
