If someone tells you strongman is all about slow, raw strength, show this video to kindly correct them. While competing at the 2016 World’s Strongest Man in Botswana — which runs until August 20th — Icelandic strongman Hafthor Bjornsson set a new keg toss World Record, adding yet another mark we need to update on our infographic.
Bjornsson launched a 15kg keg over a 7.15 meter bar, beating his own record mark from earlier this year (set at March’s Arnold Classic Strongman in Columbus, Ohio). Explosion, height, speed, strength, timing…combine them all into a towering 6’9″ frame, and you’ve Thor.
Thor Bjornsson is a multi-time podium finisher at the WSM competition, but he’s never taken the top spot on the podium. This year could be his chance after a string of Arnold Classic victories earlier this year, and while he’s still got defending champ Brian Shaw to worry about, 4-time champion Zydrunas Savickas will be competing at the Arnold Classic Asia instead.
We’ll keep you updated as the competition progresses in Africa. Who do you think will win the title of World’s Strongest Man this year? Can Shaw repeat, or will it be a first timer taking the top spot?
