We may be full swing into 2019, but there are still a few loose ends from 2018 that need a little attention. One of these 2018 loose ends that needs some of the strength sports community’s attention comes into the form of The World Games 2018 Athlete of the Year. The World Games’ list this year includes a wide variety of elite and world-level athletes from multiple sports, along with powerlifting legend Jennifer Thompson.
Thompson probably doesn’t need much of an introduction, especially if you’re invested in the sport of powerlifting, but in case you’re unaware of who she is, she’s a 10-time IPF World Champion, has claimed multiple USAPL Raw National titles, and currently holds five all-time IPF World Records in the -63kg and -72kg weight classes (two of which are in the bench press single lift category).
This year alone, Thompson has both officially and unofficially pushed her bench press and total world records further in the -63kg weight class. And that’s not to mention her big wins at the 2018 USAPL Bench Press Nationals and the IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships.
Last year, world-renowned speed climber Reza Alipourshenazandifar took home the title of The World Games 2017 Athlete of the Year with 90,790 votes, while Ukrainian powerlifter Larysa Soloviova came in a very close second with 90,036 votes. Could 2018 be the year of powerlifting? We don’t about you, but we can’t think of a better athlete to take home this year’s title than Thompson!

On January 15th, the field will be narrowed down to the final 10 athletes. We’re not saying we have a calendar reminder set every morning to vote, but we have a calendar reminder set every morning to vote!
