In what many US-based fans will consider an upset, Team Europe has won the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Invitational. The team was comprised of:
Katrin Davidsdottir
Sara Sigmundsdottir
Björgvin Guðmundsson
Lukas Högberg
Coach: Samantha Briggs
With a lineup that stacked — and experienced in this competition from previous years — it was never a question as to whether Europe would perform well. It was a question of whether they could finally power past a US squad coached and captained by Rich Froning.
In the end, their fitness was proven.
Team USA finished in second place, followed by Team Pacific in 3rd and Team Canada in 4th. This was the last competition for Team Canada member (and last year, coach) Michele Letendre, who announced her plan to retire earlier this year.
This is the first-ever victory for Team Europe, and only the second time since in Invitational history that Team USA hasn’t emerged with a victory.
The two-hour event took place at the General Motors Centre in Toronto, Canada. The full event was live streamed on YouTube and can be watched via the embed below.
The final workout determined the winner, and Team Europe finished the relay ahead of Team USA to secure their victory.
