CJ Cummings Breaks 15 Records At 2019 Pan American Weightlifting Championships

The second day of the 2019 Pan American Weightlifting Championships is currently wrapping up in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Yesterday, Team USA kicked off their very strong start to the Championships with Alyssa Ritchey sweeping gold in the -49kg weight class, and Morghan King securing silver in the clean & jerk and bronze in the total.

Today, Team USA had five athletes compete and among them was the one and only CJ Cummings. Cummings took the platform at 3:30 p.m. competing in the -73kg weight class and put on a commanding performance — reminding everyone just how good he is.  So just how good was Cummings’ performance? Check it out below!

  • 3 IWF Junior World Records
  • 3 Junior Pan American Records
  • 3 Senior Pan American Records
  • 3 Junior American Records
  • 3 Senior American Records
  • 3 Gold Medals

That’s right, Cummings, who went six-for-six on the day, swept gold for -73kg weight class and racked up and broke a total of 15 records.

Cummings started his epic day by opening his snatches with an easy and routine 144kg. For his second attempt, Cummings successfully hit 150kg for a new Pan American Junior Record. Then for his third attempt, Cummings successfully completed a snatch with 153kg, which was enough to break the -73kg Junior and Senior American Records, Junior and Senior Pan American Records, and set an IWF Junior World Record.

Heading into the clean & jerks, Cummings was positioned very nicely on the leaderboard. To open his clean & jerks, Cummings hit an easy 182kg, then hit a successful second attempt with 187kg, which broke the -73kg Junior and Senior American Records. For his third clean & jerk attempt, Cummings hit 191kg successfully and broke — once again — the -73kg Junior and Senior American Records, Junior and Senior Pan American Records, and pushed his IWF Junior World Record further.

To wrap up his stellar day, Cummings finished with a 344kg total. This total earned him the -73kg Junior and Senior American Records, Junior and Senior Pan American Records, and an IWF Junior World Record.

Remember, the Pan American Championships are a gold level qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so Team USA’s strong start could be a great indication of what to expect over the next year and a half.
