Nineteen-year-old CJ Cummings, who competes as a -73kg weightlifter for Team USA, had another Junior World Record breaking performance. At the Junior Pan Ams in La Habana, Cuba this week, Cummings broke Junior World Records in the snatch, clean & jerk, and total, and was crowned the -73kg Junior Pan Ams Champion. This is the second time in a month that he’s set new Junior World Records. Take a bow, Cummings.
The lifts in question: a 154kg snatch, a 193kg clean & jerk, and 347kg total. All of these numbers not only are new Junior World Records, but are also new USA Weightlifting Senior Records, plus new Pan Am Junior and Senior Records.
Again, these broke the records Cummings set just last month when he won his fourth IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships. He picked up a silver medal-winning 145kg snatch, a gold medal and a new Junior World Record with a 192kg clean & jerk, and gold medal for his 337kg total. You can watch those lifts below.
And one month before that he absolutely dominated the Pan American Championships when he broke 15 records.
Cummings is one of the USA weightlifters that we think has a pretty good chance of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. This year’s qualification system for the upcoming Olympics may be completely new, but considering what kind of year Cummings has had so far, we fancy his chance.
Check out the video below where we discuss which USA weightlifters are likely to qualify, we break down Robi Points, the new qualification process, and who some of the top USA weightlifters athletes to watch for this year are.
What World Record will Cummings break next?
