The original Adidas Adipower weightlifting shoe has been a fan favorite for multiple years, so when word was officially released about the 2’s debut, weightlifters everywhere rejoiced. One thing that’s very noticeable about the Adidas Adipower 2 model is that this shoe has received a ton of changes. In fact, it’s nearly a completely different shoe, which could be seen as either a great or bad thing depending on the athlete.
Personally, I was a fan of the Adidas Adipower 2 for a few specific training scenarios. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that I do miss some of the signature Adidas Adipower construction characteristics, which we’ll briefly cover below. Nonetheless, I did find multiple things to love about the Adidas Adipower 2 including,
- Flexible forefoot that accommodates for functional fitness workouts.
- Strong and stable .79″ TPU heel.
- Simple and durable full canvas outer construction.
All in all, I think the Adidas Adipower 2 is a great model for someone looking specifically for a shoe to tackle squat and functional fitness focused workouts.
What We Like About the Adidas Adipower 2
- Flexible and maneuverable for the functional fitness athlete and recreational lifter.
- Consistent TPU heel and height as the Adidas Adipower.
What We Don’t Like About the Adidas Adipower 2
- A bit too flexible for adequate platform feedback.
- Lack of Adidas Torsion system.
The Adidas Adipower II offers a full textile woven outer construction and strong 20.1mm heel height, along with an ultra-secure straps & laces closing system to keep the midfoot stable during lifts. Adidas has updated this model with additional heel and forefoot support, making it suited to lifts including snatches and clean & jerks, as well as squats.
Heel Height
Effective Heel Height: .79″ / 20.1mm
The effective heel height for the Adidas Adipower 2 sits at .79″/20.1mm, which is consistent with the previous model. If you like consistency in your shoe, especially when it comes to heel height, then previous Adipower users will be happy with this construction trait.
Similar to the previous Adipower, the 2 has a TPU heel, but it’s constructed slightly different. As opposed to utilizing the visible pillars, the Adipower 2 has a flatter outer construction is made with a texture that feels similar to knurling.
Weight
Shoe Model | Weight |
Adidas Adipower 2 | 502 grams / 17.7 ounces |
Adidas Adipower | 459 grams / 16.2 ounces |
Outer Construction
On the Adipower 2, the outer construction is relatively simple. There’s a full textile woven outer, which feels slightly similar to the canvas used in the Adidas Powerlift 4. The only real difference between these two models is that Adipower 2’s outer construction is slightly more rigid and feels a bit more durable.
On the lateral side from the mid-foot to the toe, there is Adidas three-stripe branding. These three stripes have a synthetic leather overlay and feel smooth.
Foot Straps
There’s one mid-foot strap that provides mid-foot security in the Adidas Adipower 2. The placement of the strap is similar to the original Adipower, however, the 2’s strap sits slightly lower on the medial side.
Performance
Overall, the Adidas Adipower 2 performed decently well in multiple lifting settings. Personally, I think this shoe excels for the functional fitness athlete and recreational lifter slightly better than the original Adidas Adipower. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Adipower, however, the Adipower 2’s increased flexibility makes it a bit more accommodating for a variety of activities.
On the flip side, I do think dedicated weightlifters will be 50/50 on the overall flexibility of this model. Flexibility is great for comfort and dynamic movements, but it’s not the best for platform reactivity, AKA this shoe isn’t the most reactive for platform feedback (especially on wood).
Overall, I think the Adidas Adipower 2 is an okay shoe, but it’s not directly comparable to the original Adipower. If you were a huge fan of the Adipower, then don’t buy this shoe expecting a model that is extremely similar.
Price
For the Adidas Adipower 2, you can expect to pay $200.00 USD. This price is pretty standard for newer big brand weightlifting shoes. If you want the latest and greatest and want a more flexible weightlifting shoe, then I can this price being justifiable.
The Adidas Adipower II offers a full textile woven outer construction and strong 20.1mm heel height, along with an ultra-secure straps & laces closing system to keep the midfoot stable during lifts. Wrapping Up
The Adidas Adipower 2 is a lot different compared to the fan favorite Adipower. However, like everything new, the beauty of this shoe comes down to the context in which you plan to use it. If you want the Adipower 2, then expect a shoe that feels very much different to its previous model. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s something to keep in mind at all times.
In my opinion, I think this shoe will excel for the functional fitness athlete and the fitness enthusiast that wants a shoe strictly for squats.
