Over the weekend, CrossFit athletes from across the world met in South Africa to compete at the Fittest In Cape Town competition. The Fittest In Cape Town competition served as the fourth CrossFit Sanctional and concluded Sunday with familiar CrossFit Games athletes sitting atop the leaderboard.
For the individual women, 2-time CrossFit Games Champion and 6-time Games athlete Katrin Davidsdottir took home first, and for the individual men, 2-time Games athlete Sean Sweeney won, aka “CrossFit Cowboy”, as he goes by on social media. In respects to the top team, Team Vondelgym from the Netherlands composed of Nienke Van Overveld, Jeremy Reijnders, Sigrid Koolhaas, and Sven Verheul topped the leaderboard.
Davidsdottir, Sweeney, and Team Vondelgym are now 2019 CrossFit Games bound.
Throughout the 10-event filled weekend, Davidsdottir put on a commanding performance taking home four individual event wins and she finished in the top five in 5 events. She edged out CrossFit Games veteran and weightlifter Mia Ackerlund by 54 points.
For the men, Sweeney put on a great performance and finished in the top eight of every event. There was a point when Sweeney and CrossFit Games veteran Cole Sager went back and forth for the top spot, although, Sager’s 14th place finish in the second event had set him back too far to make up the spread. Sweeney’s performance was a strong bounce back from the 22nd place finish he had at the Wodapalooza Fitness Festival from two weeks prior.
In three weeks, the CrossFit Strength In Depth competition will serve as the fifth Sanctional and will take place in London on February 23-24th. Check out the full 2019 CrossFit Games Season schedule.
