CrossFit Director of Sport, Dave Castro, addressed the community in a short video posted on his YouTube channel on Aug. 8.
Castro began by saying some words about Lazar Đukić, who died during Event 1 of the 2024 CrossFit Games. He then briefly touched upon the discussions that took place on Thursday night when it was decided the Games would resume on Friday, Aug. 9.
“It’s been an incredibly difficult day with the incident today with Lazar, and I’m mourning just like our community is. Just like the family is. And trying to focus on what we can do for them and how we can make it better with what we’re able to do with this small thing we have,” Castro said.
- Athlete representatives — including individuals, teams, and coaches — and members of Đukić’s family had lengthy meetings on Thursday afternoon and evening to determine a path forward for the rest of the competition. The plan involves continuing the Games on Friday, August 9, beginning with a tribute to Đukić.
Castro didn’t provide any more details about the discussions, saying, “I want his family to be what we’re all thinking right now and what we focus on.”
Castro ended the video by saying, “Maybe tomorrow I’ll be able to speak more, but tonight, this is it. Thank you, and I’m sorry.”
