Froning Hints at New Mayhem Teammate

This weekend, while competing at the BCS Classic competition in College Station, TX, Rich Froning said that the athlete replacing Dre Strohm will be an individual competitor from the 2019 CrossFit Games, according to an athlete who attended the event.

Context: Dre Strohm, who is engaged, is leaving the team after one year, forcing another replacement for the legacy championship team.

The shortlist: We’ve been hearing for the last couple weeks that Scott Panchik is slated to replace Strohm on the fittest team on earth. Panchik, narrowly missed the podium in his 8th consecutive trip to the Games.

  • Mr. Consistency over the past eight seasons: 4th, 11th, 6th, 6th, 6th, 5th, 4th and 4th.
  • His average 5.75 place finish is the lowest of any athlete who’s never stood on the podium (among athletes with more than one Games appearance).

The big picture: If Panchik is the fourth and final member of Mayhem, the four-time champions will emerge an even stronger team. Despite a new season format that allows for super teams, it will be very difficult for any team in the current field to pose a serious threat to Mayhem.

  • Mayhem’s 2019 performance shattered all major team Games records.
  • They earned the greatest percentage of team points possible all-time at 91.0%.
  • Greatest team points-margin of victory all-time at 198.
  • Won the most Games events all-time with 21 (five at CFG19).
  • Won the first two events of the Games which had never been done by a team at the Games.

Mattie Rogers Now Training With Catalyst Athletics — Team USA weightlifter Mattie Rogers is now training with Catalyst Athletics. Danny Camargo posted his thoughts on the move on Instagram yesterday.

— “Mattie Rogers is a professional athlete, competing is her full time job. I am a professional coach, supporting athletes with various aspirations is my full time job. As such, this change was a professional decision, one that was discussed between us.

— “Mattie will be great wherever she goes and I will remain proud of our time together and proud of whatever she does next. She’s off to World’s in Thailand in the next couple of days. I’ll be watching.”

Catching Up With Noah Ohlsen at Home in Miami — Noah Ohlsen sat down with the Miami Herald to share how he is recovering from Madison and his goals for the coming year.

— “Getting to the podium has been a dream for Ohlsen. He placed fourth in 2017. Even though he didn’t achieve his ultimate goal of winning the whole thing, Ohlsen leaves the Games with a $115,000 purse and the distinction of being the ‘Fittest in Miami.’

— “I’m not going to let the fact that I did well change anything,” Ohlsen said. “I’m sure there will be added pressure and expectation from external sources but I’m not going to let that change the way I play my game. I’m going to continue to work hard and have fun, enjoy what I do and bring the same me out onto the floor next year and every year after that.”

“CrossFit Non-profits Launching a Collaborative Event, 3-2-1 IMPACT!” by Jessica Danger, Morning Chalk Up

At the biannual gathering of CrossFit based nonprofit organizations, someone pitched an idea. What if all the nonprofits there came together, in one large fundraising event, to showcase the hard work and generosity of the CrossFit community?

Hours later, after brainstorming and conversations over coffee, 3-2-1 IMPACT! was born.

What is it?

3-2-1 IMPACT! will be 24 hours long from noon on December 7 until noon on December 8. Each nonprofit organization will form teams of nine and will have 24 hours to accrue as many calories as possible on three ergs. Here’s the kicker: All three machines must be running the entire 24 hours.

Teams will continue raising funds throughout the event and everything raised their nonprofit organization gets to keep. All funds raised after the start of the event — through silent auctions, merch sales, friends donating to chip in during the event — will go into one large pot to be spread across several organizations. The donations matter, you can “earn” extra calories towards your team based on donations.

Five nonprofits are onboard already: CrossFit Foundation, The Reveille Project, FAITH RXD, Steve’s Club, and The Phoenix. Conveniently, four of them are located in the Denver area, which is where 3-2-1 IMPACT! will be held in December.

“We’re already a synergistic thing meeting the needs of the CrossFit community,” Kevin Ogar of the Reveille Project told Morning Chalk Up on a call. “We really want to create a larger impact in the community.”
