BarBend Grant Program: Rules, How to Apply, and Proposal Tips

BarBend wants to support new research in health and fitness. Learn more here.

Last updated on August 2nd, 2023

BarBend is seeking competitive grant applications that align with our mission “to help people live stronger, healthier lifestyles by delivering the best, most-informed content in the strength sports and fitness space.” Competitive project proposals should emphasize evidence-based recommendations, focus on an under-represented sector of strength training, explicitly detail how the project findings can be disseminated to the public, and demonstrate how the project is aligned with BarBend’s goals.

BarBend Grant Program Details

Eligible Projects: The types of projects funded will vary based on the level of knowledge and experience of project team members. Eligible projects can include elements of traditional research methods and/or practice. Projects involving human subjects research must demonstrate Institutional Review Board approval from the sponsoring institution.

Award: Grant(s) may be awarded for $5,000 for one year of support. The number of grants awarded will ultimately depend on the quality, potential outcomes, and relevance to BarBend’s mission. Funds cannot be used for indirect costs or F&A.

Grant Period: The grant award period is rolling and begins December 21, 2021, though we highly recommend applying before July 1, 2022.

Deadline: Applications must be submitted electronically (send to info@barbend.com). Proposals received and submitted to the requested specifications (below) will be reviewed by a designated committee of BarBend staff and affiliate writers. Applicants who have awards granted will be notified of the status within six (6) weeks of submission.

How to Apply

Please not that we will likely not be able respond directly to all applicants. For the best chance of consideration, please ensure all materials are attached with your initial application.

Proposal (Criteria & Guidelines): Applications should be submitted electronically to info@barbend.com and MUST include the following components:

  • Project team information (name, credentials, affiliated organization, and title of the project team leader and any additional team members)
  • Project information (project title, project description, intended outcomes, alignment with BarBend’s goal, anticipated deliverables)
  • Budget and budget justification
  • Resumes/CVs for Team Leads and Members
  • All application materials should be sent via attachments to info@barbend.com with a brief cover letter in the email body
  • For applicants with promising submissions, BarBend may request additional information during the review process

Resumes/CVs for Project Team Leader and Additional Team Members: The project team leader and any additional team members MUST submit a resume or curriculum vitae (5-page limit per team member).

Grant Expectations: Awardees will be required to submit a mid-year and year-end report. Projects must result in one or more deliverables to be disseminated with the BarBend community.

Approval and Ethics: All research conducted is subject to approval and ethical oversight by educational institutes and/or research governing bodies under which the researchers operate.
