Dwayne Coleman of Slidell, LA, has become the talk of the strength sports world after he squatted 408 kilograms (900 pounds) equipped in a powerlifting meet to break his state’s all-time record in the lift. He went on to claim the total record for super-heavyweights in the state.

Coleman’s efforts occurred at the 2024 Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Powerlifting State Championships in Lafayette, LA, on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Representing Salmen High School, Coleman bench pressed 226.7 kilograms (500 pounds) and pulled 285.7 kilograms (630 pounds) in the deadlift for a total of 920.5 kilograms (2,030 pounds). The summary of his day is below:

2024 LHSAA Powerlifting State Championships Results, Dwayne Coleman, Superheavyweight

  • Squat — 397 kilograms (875 pounds)
    • Bonus attempt — 408.1 kilograms (900 pounds)*
  • Bench Press — 226.5 kilograms (500 pounds)
  • Deadlift — 285.5 kilograms (630 pounds)
  • Total — 909 kilograms (2,004 pounds)*

*Louisiana State records

For many, the day’s highlight was Coleman’s 900-pound squat, which broke the previous record of 324.2 kilograms (715 pounds) by Mehki Smith of Woodlawn High School by 185 pounds. Coleman’s squat is shown in the video below, courtesy of Bleacher Report.

Coleman weighed in for the meet at 209.5 kilograms (462 pounds). He wore a squat suit and knee wraps for the lift. He positioned the barbell on his shoulders and removed it from the squat rack. He stepped back to take his position with the weight, using a moderate foot stance.

Upon the judge’s command, Coleman lowered into the hole and immediately rose with the weight, yelling during the ascent, which took approximately three seconds. The official gave the rack command once Coleman returned to the standing position. The lift was approved, and the crowd cheered for Coleman’s efforts.

Aside from winning the Division II state superheavyweight championship, Coleman was bestowed the Outstanding Lifter award. At the time of this article’s publication, there is no word on whether Coleman will continue to pursue competitive powerlifting after graduating. Still, the high school senior showed potential to make a big mark on the sport if he competes on sanctioned platforms in the future.
