Athletes to Watch
Several big names are competing in the 2023 NAPF North American Championships. Five-time world champion Ray Williams will compete in the Open +120-kilogram class.
Williams holds the all-time raw squat world record in knee sleeves, scoring 477.5 kilograms at the 2017 USAPL Arnold Pro American and since furthered it to 490 kilograms at the 2019 USAPL Arnold Pro American. He won his seventh national title earlier in 2023:
The roster includes Mike Tuchscherer, Bryce Krawczyk, Suzie Hartwig-Gary, and super-heavy weight equipped lifter Carlos Campos Murillo.
Dr. Layne Norton is best known for his science-led posts on nutrition, but he is also a veteran of the powerlifting platform. At the 2015 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Classic World Championships in Salo, Finland, Norton broke the squat world record with 303 kilograms (668 pounds) in the 93-kilogram class en route to an overall silver medal.
Norton is the current Masters 1 (M1, age 40-49) world champion and will compete in the M1 93-kilogram class. He published a video on his Instagram page regarding his mindset for this meet on his Instagram page six weeks before the contest’s kickoff. See what he had to say below:
