If you follow USA Weightlifting at all, the name Jourdan Delacruz is not unfamiliar to you. After all, she holds the American records for the snatch, clean & jerk, and total in the -55kg weight class for both the junior and senior divisions. So heading into the 2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Rome, Italy, it was only fitting that Delacruz move into a different weight class and prove that she is pound for pound one of the best in the sport despite only being 21 years of age.
Check out her record setting 108kg (238lb) clean & jerk from 1K’s Instagram page:
It is clear from how the emotion hit her right as she was about to lock it out at the top that this was a big accomplishment for Delacruz. Not only because that particular lift was so smooth and it locked her for gold in the event, but also because this performance saw her reset all three American records for for the -49kg class after she went six for six including an 87kg (192lb) snatch.
USA’s Morghan King claimed the silver in the -49kg class with a new personal record total of 185kg (408lbs).
Delacruz’s 87kg (192lb) snatch replaced the record standard 84kg (185lb). Her 108kg (238lb) clean & jerk, which is over twice her bodyweight, and her 195kg (430lb) total replaced Alyssa Ritchey’s 107kg (236lb) clean & jerk and 190kg (419lb) total set at the Pan American Championships in April 2019 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
According to Delacruz’s post from December, 2019 was “physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausting” for her.
She competed in six high level meets, including the Pan American Championships that saw her claim all American records in the -55kg class, and moved down a weight class in pursuit of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Although the future of weightlifting at the Olympic Games has been shakey recently, Delacruz’s future as a dominant force in the sport is not.
