At the 2023 IPF World Classic Championships in St. Julian’s, Malta, from June 11-18, 2023, the Women’s 76-kilogram class saw a historic gold-medal performance by Karline Tongotea of New Zealand. A third of her first-place-593-kilogram total was a new IPF world record raw squat of 225.5 kilograms on her third attempt.

Tongotea’s new squat record furthered the previous IPF raw squat world record by three kilograms. Check out her record lift in the video below, courtesy of the IPF’s Instagram page:

Tongotea’s speed with the barbell is a sight to behold. There was no doubt that once she reversed course at the bottom of the squat, the bar would return to the starting position and, by doing so, rewrite the record books.

Tongotea seemed to curtain call off the stage as though it was a foregone conclusion that she would score a never-before-seen lift on an IPF platform. A quick kiss blown to the crowd before walking off stage is all the celebration for a new IPF world record.
