The second day of the 2016 USA Weightlifting (USAW) American Open kicked off right where Friday night ended. Medals were presented in the men’s 69KG, 77KG, and 85KG categories, along with the woman’s 63KG weight class.
69KG
16 year-old weightlifting phenomenon CJ Cummings easily won the 69KG American Open Championship on his way to several new American records, including a 183KG (403lb) clean & jerk to break his own Junior & Senior American record by 1KG. Cummings went 6 for 6, ending with a 138KG (304lb) snatch (new Junior American Record) and 321KG (706lb) Junior Total Record. Cummings swept gold in the snatch, clean & jerk, and total.
Aaron Addison snatched 123KG (271lb) to win a silver medal in the lift and in overall total. Uli Manzanilla was successful on his opening clean & jerk attempt of 155KG (341lb) to cause a tie with Jordan Wissinger for the third highest total – 270KG (594lb). Manzanilla won the bronze based on the tie breaker of having a lower body weight.
77KG
This category was controlled by 2015 Pan American Games Silver medalist Yadier Nunez from the start. Nunez made 3 of his 6 attempts, including a snatch of 151KG (332lb) and a clean and jerk of 187KG (411lb) for a 338KG (744lb) total.
Another 16 year old weightlifting phenomenon, Harrison Maurus pulled off a mild upset, when he out-lifted former Pan American Champion Yoni Andica of Colombia to win a silver medal. Highlighted by his lift of 182KG (400lb) on his second attempt in the clean & jerk, Maurus extended his own 16-17 year old youth records in the snatch – 146KG (321lb), clean and jerk and total – 328KG (722lb). Andica successfully totaled 316KG (695lb) to win the overall bronze

James Tatum continued his medal winning ways by sweeping all three gold medals on lifts of 148KG (325lb) in the snatch and 178KG (392lb) in the clean & jerk for a 326KG (717lb) total. Perennial favorites in this category, Travis Cooper and Anthony Pomponio, were unable to successfully complete lifts in both the snatch and clean & jerk and therefore did not post a total.
Chris Rodriguez Ocasio successfully totaled 317KG (697lb) to win the silver medal by 1KG over John Downey who finished with 316KG (695lb) overall.
63KG
Maddy Myers was successful at defending her American Open Championship that she had won at last year’s competition in Reno, NV.
