Rory McIlroy Used a Late-Round Protein Bar to Help Fuel His Masters Win

Rory McIlroy won the 89th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 13, in a nail-biting playoff against Justin Rose. The 35-year-old McIlroy is now the sixth golfer to complete the career Grand Slam that includes winning all four major championships: The Masters, PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and the Open Championship.

Golfers who compete at the sport’s elite level can spend three to five hours on the course during an event like the Masters, typically under the stress of countless eyeballs, cameras, and commentary on every move they make. (1) While a clean stroke, a focused mindset, and a tender touch on the green are necessities at a skills level, how do the top golfers keep their bodies fueled up while walking miles on the course?

In a Golf Digest interview, McIlroy shared that his diet was “not good ” during his youth, but this compelled him to “reassess what [he] was doing” regarding his choices of “fried food, burgers, pizza, and soda.”

Part of that reassessment was ensuring he hit his daily protein intake of 180 grams and eating protein before carbs since he discovered his blood sugar responded better to that sequence. (2)
