The Torian Pro has become synonymous with hosting Australia’s top CrossFit athletes for the last ten seasons.
- However, Oceania fans have had the chance to see the seven-time Fittest Woman on Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, compete at home only twice at the Torian Pro, including once at the inaugural competition in 2015. She won — but what else is new?
Toomey-Orr has not competed much in Australia since 2018, so her announcement that she will participate in the Torian Pro at the end of May is significant for the Australian community.
- “In May, I’m taking the floor at Torian Pro, but this time, it’s different,” Toomey-Orr said in a YouTube video in April. “This time, it’s my moment to say goodbye to this chapter. This sport has given me everything, every challenge, every triumph, and, most importantly, the incredible community that surrounds it.”
Whether she is retiring or not remains somewhat unclear. However, if her days in the sport are indeed numbered, Australian fans will have the rare opportunity to watch her live at home this month.
Tia and Torian
Toomey-Orr’s second Torian Pro took place in 2022, the second year it served as a CrossFit Games Semifinal.
- She, of course, won the event by 40 points over arguably Australia’s second biggest star of all time, Kara Saunders.
In both 2022 and 2024, Toomey-Orr qualified for the CrossFit Games through a North American Semifinal, winning the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge in 2022 and the North America East Semifinal in 2024. However, she did not compete in 2023 because she was pregnant.
Going back further than that, in 2019, Toomey-Orr did “Friday Night Lights” (completing Open Workout 20.5 with other pros like Rich Froning), but did not compete there.
- That year, CrossFit introduced the Sanctionals qualification system, providing two opportunities to compete in Australia for a spot at the CrossFit Games: the Australian CrossFit Championship in Queensland and the Down Under CrossFit Championship in Wollongong. Toomey-Orr did not compete in either event.
Instead, Toomey-Orr secured her place in the 2019 CrossFit Games by finishing in the top 20 worldwide in the CrossFit Open and by becoming the Australian National Champion in the Open.
Aside from her sole appearance at the Torian Pro in 2022, we must go back to 2018 to find Toomey-Orr on any leaderboards at major Australian competitions.
- From 2015 to 2018, Toomey-Orr participated in the Pacific Regionals in Australia, placing third in her breakthrough year of 2015, second in both 2016 and 2017, and first in 2018.
Worth noting: While the In-Affiliate Semifinals leaderboard is not yet official, two of Toomey-Orr’s strongest competitors for a 2025 Games berth at Torian – Maddie Sturt and Grace Walton – are currently in qualifying positions (in fifth and eighth, respectively). If that holds, they will be out of the running in Brisbane, making Toomey-Orr’s path to the Games that much easier (if she chooses to take it).
The Big Picture
Ultimately, Toomey-Orr has competed considerably less often than many of her contemporaries over the years. When she has competed, it has primarily been in the United States.
- In addition to winning her seven CrossFit Games titles in the United States, she has also competed at the Rogue Invitational five times, four of which were held in the United States, and at TYR Wodapalooza in Miami, FL, twice.
Whether or not this will be Toomey-Orr’s final time competing in Australia is anyone’s guess. Still, either way, Australian fans will surely appreciate the opportunity to see the greatest CrossFit athlete of all time say “goodbye to this chapter.” On home soil.
The 2025 Torian Pro takes place May 30-June 1 at Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane, Australia.
