Cross-Country 5K Recap
The Individual men and Individual women ran the 5K together. Khrennikov hopped out to the front of the pack to set the pace with Đukić, Adler, and Hoste behind him. At the two-minute mark, the athletes started to spread out a bit more as hills were present along the course.
Upenieks and Vellner joined the leader’s group, and space separated them from the rest of the field. The commentary team remarked that the course terrain was unknown to the athletes. Adler wore a heart rate monitor around his torso and looked much more comfortable than previous running events in past Games.
Emily Rolfe led the women’s field with no other Individual women within sight of her halfway through lap two. Adler overtook the lead to set the pace for the entire field, with Đukić as his closest companion. Upenieks fell off the leading group’s pace, leaving only five in contention for the event win.
Khrennikov’s stride appeared heavier than the rest of the leading group. Vellner wasn’t too much different. Adler, Đukić, and Hoste maintained a light bounciness to their stride.
By 10 minutes, Khrennikov and Vellner fell off the leading pace. Adler accelerated to further his lead. Đukić and Hoste stayed the pace with Adler. This pattern held through minute 13 until Khrennikov and Veller were no longer in range of the leading trio.
By minute 14, Đukić fell off the lead pace, leaving Hoste and Adler alone out front. Hoste made his move to overtake Adler for the lead at 15 minutes. Rolfe remained in no danger of losing this event for the women. Hoste did not relinquish the lead to Adler, and they went first and second in the event, respectively.
