Only 38 points separated the top six men heading into Day 3 at the CrossFit Games at the MVP Arena in Albany, NY.
The race only tightened after “IE08: Going Dark” on Sunday morning, an event that flip-flopped the leaderboard once more in a race where no position has been secure all weekend.
“IE8: Going Dark”
- 50/40 Echo bike calories
- 100-foot yoke carry
- 30 deficit handstand push-ups
- 100-foot yoke carry
- 50/40 calories on the Echo bike
The biggest winner of all was arguably Austin Hatfield, who entered the day in eighth place, 34 points behind third.
- He made his move on the deficit handstand push-ups, pulling ahead of the field on his way to his first event win of the competition.
The performance vaulted him from eighth to sixth. That said, it’s so close that he’s only 10 points behind James Sprague in third place (and 53 points out of the top spot).
Jayson Hopper, the leader going in, and Ricky Garard also delivered great performances. They finished second and fourth, respectively, and cemented their spots in the top two – at least for now.
On the other side of the fence, Justin Medeiros, who was fourth going in, finished 23rd, dropping him to eighth overall.
With two events remaining and at least 200 points up for grabs, seven men are still very much in the running to finish in the top three:
- Jayson Hopper (635 points)
- Ricky Garard (617 points)
- James Sprague (592 points)
- Jay Crouch (586 points)
- Dallin Pepper (585 points)
- Austin Hatfield (582 points)
- Roman Khrennikov (566 points).
On the women’s side: After briefly losing the leader’s jersey to the UK’s Lucy Campbell on Saturday, Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr looked as strong as ever on Sunday morning as she continues her quest for an eighth CrossFit Games title.
- She wasn’t the first athlete to reach the deficit handstand push-ups, but when she did, she quickly logged an easy-looking set of eight reps, as many other athletes chose to do singles right from the start.
Toomey-Orr took the lead and maintained it for her third event win of the weekend, giving her a 130-point advantage over Campbell, who struggled with the handstand push-ups and finished 17th in the event.
- Aimee Cringle, fifth going into the event, also did herself some favors with a fourth-place finish, helping her overtake Mirjam von Rohr and Arielle Loewen and put herself in position for the third podium spot potentially.
With two events remaining, it’s hard to imagine Toomey-Orr won’t do it again, and Campbell still has a 45-point lead over Cringle. But beyond that, it’s an incredibly close race for the final podium spot.
Forty-one points separate Cringle in third place from Olivia Kerstetter in seventh, so realistically, five women still have a very legitimate shot at climbing onto the podium:
- Aimee Cringle (535 points)
- Maddie Sturt (507 points)
- Arielle Loewen (504 points)
- Mirjam von Rohr (500 points)
- Olivia Kerstetter (494 points).
