With three events down and three to go at the 2025 TYR Wodapalooza in Miami, FL, there are both familiar faces and a few surprises toward the top of the leaderboard.
The 2024 Fittest Man on Earth, James Sprague, leads the men, while Lucy Campbell sits atop the womenโs leaderboard.
Remind me: Campbell placed 16th in her rookie season at the 2022 Games, but a wrist injury that required multiple surgeries kept her out of competition in both 2023 and 2024.
- She made her return to competition with a win at the 2024 Marbella Championships in Spain last October.

Three-time Wodapalooza champion Pat Vellner sits in second for the men, 27 points behind Sprague. Meanwhile, 2024 Games rookie Harry Lightfoot is 12 points behind Vellner in third. Jonne Koski and Aniol Ekai round out the top five heading into Day 2.
- Ricky Garard came into the competition looking to win his third consecutive TYR Wodapalooza title, but after a tough third event where he finished 22nd, he currently sits in eighth overall and 31 points away from the podium.
On the womenโs side, Swedenโs Emma Tall is in second, 16 points behind Campbell, and Alexis Raptis is 11 points behind Tall in third. Rounding out the top five are 2024 CrossFit Games bronze medalist Emily Rolfe and the heavy favorite heading into the competition, 2023 Games champion Laura Horvath.
Day 1 Recap
Event 1: Two Rounds Too Many
The competition began with a long endurance workout with a 35-minute time cap.
2 Rounds For Time:
- 50/40 cal bike
- 1000-meter run
- 150 box step or jump overs, 20-inches across
The Men
It was no surprise to see Sprague dominate the first event of the competition, as endurance has long been one of his strengths. He took the event win ahead of reigning Wodapalooza champion Garard, another proven runner. (Garard was the only man to run a sub-five-minute mile at the 2024 CrossFit Games).
- More surprising, however, was Vellner, who often struggles on longer endurance events. He managed to pick up 94 points with a third-place finish.
Koski finished fifth, Ekai seventh, and Lightfoot eighth.

The Women
While all eyes were on Rolfe, who almost always dominates running events (and she also won โChadโ โ 1,000 step-ups for time โ at the 2024 Games), it was Campbell and Astrid Tind who led the way almost from the start.
- Campbell made it hard on Tind and started closing the gap during the last set of 150 step-ups. Tind managed to hold her off, picking up the event win over Campbell, who finished second.
Worth noting: Tind might be unknown to even a well-informed CrossFit fan, but she has competed with a team at the CrossFit Games in 2022 and 2024.
Horvath rounded out the top three, while Rolfe finished back in seventh, Raptis in eighth, and Tall in 13th.
Event 2: The Ocean Drive Drag Race
The second of three events on Day 1 was a triplet with rowing, toes-to-bar, and a progressively heavier sled drag, with one-minute rest periods between the three rounds.
For Time:
- 21/18 cal row
- 21 toes-to-bar
- sled drag
1-minute rest
- 18/15 cal row
- 18 toes-to-bar
- sled drag
1-minute rest
- 15/12 cal row
- 15 toes-to-bar
- sled drag
The Men
Vellner and Garard were neck-and-neck during the first round. Though Garard edged him out, Vellner was able to take a solid lead during the second round as Garard started to slow.
Vellner won the event by eight seconds, ahead of both Sprague and Ekai, who finished at the same time, but Sprague managed to take second due to their tie-break time.
Garard finished fifth, and Lightfoot came in sixth.

The Women
The leaders at the time, Tind and Campbell, were both in the first of three heats and had another close battle. This time, though, Campbell came out on top.
- Their times held up through the second heat, but in Heat 3, Tall bested both their times and took the event win, helping her jump into fifth overall at the time.
Horvath finished fourth, while Rolfe was seventh and Raptis 11th.
Event 3: High Stakes, Tight Ropes
The third and final event of Day 1 was a heavy shoulder test with a lot of technical gymnastics.
For Time:
- 75 VELITES heavy double-unders
- 90-foot handstand walk
- 21 wall-facing handstand push-ups
- Each arm: 12 single-arm dumbbell snatch + 12-meter single-arm overhead dumbbell lunge, 100/70 pounds
- 6/4 legless rope climbs
- Each arm: 12 single-arm dumbbell snatch + 12-meter single-arm overhead dumbbell lunge, 100/70 pounds
- 21 wall-facing handstand push-ups
- 90-foot handstand walk
- 75 VELITES heavy double-unders
The Women
In a post-event interview after event two, Campbell said the third event would be the biggest test for her wrist.
- She passed the test, once again winning Heat 1, the only woman in her heat to finish before the time cap. She went on to finish a respectable seventh overall, allowing her to keep her lead heading into Day 2.
The final heat belonged to Raptis, who absolutely smashed the time to beat and took the event win by 41 seconds over Brooke Wells.
Tall was right behind in third, while Horvath finished well back in 19th.
Meanwhile, Tind, who entered the event in first overall, had her first misstep, falling way back from the leaders and finishing 31st in the event. She enters Day 2 in sixth overall.

The Men
2024 Games rookie Austin Hatfield led all competitors for much of the event, but 10 minutes in, Sprague overtook the lead temporarily. He was no match for Hatfield, though, who went on to win the event in a time of 12:24, five seconds ahead of Sprague. Saxon Panchik finished third.
- The top three times were a full two minutes faster than the next fastest man, Lightfoot (15:21).
Vellner hung on for a top-10 finish, keeping him in second overall to end Day 1, while Koski finished fifth, helping him jump into fourth overall heading into Day 2.
The Big Picture
Weโre only halfway finished with the individuals in Miami, so thereโs still plenty of time for athletes to make moves.
If the last five years are any indication, we expect Vellner to fight for the menโs title, although it seems like Sprague will make it difficult for him to cruise to a fourth career victory.
On the womenโs side, though itโs a surprise to see Horvath in fifth, itโs never wise to count her out. Sheโs still 43 points behind first, but she has the ability to win workouts on the final day of competition (and she often does).
