2022 CrossFit Games Event 12 “Back Nine” Results — Adler, Horvath Claim Their Second Event Wins

August 7, 2022 by Phil Blechman

With only two events left in the 2022 CrossFit Games, what better way to reenter the Coliseum in Madison, WI, than with the heaviest deadlift ever programmed in Games history? That’s what the remaining athletes in the competition following the 10-athlete cut at the end of Day Four were compelled to do.

Jeffrey Adler is a master when it comes to moving heavy barbells under time pressure. He closed the deal in Event 12. He scored his second event win of the Games. Justin Medeiros ranked third overall in the event, extending his overall lead with only one event to go. Roman Khrennikov finished sixth, moving further into the silver-medal position as Ricky Garard fell to 13th in the event.

Tia-Clair Toomey effectively cemented her sixth consecutive Games title. Laura Horvath won her second straight event and made the bronze spot on the podium look all the more uncertain with one event in the Games left to go.

Event 12 Recap

Houdet got out to an early lead in the first heat, but Georges took it from him going into the first front squat. Haapalainen “got buried” by the first barbell after losing his balance and falling backward. Fortunately, no injury was sustained.

Georges completed heat one in a blistering time of 1:29.25 seconds. Houdet had a hiccup on the yoke back to the finish but got across second in 1:57.63. Crouch came in 10 seconds later and Vigneault 14 seconds after that.

Haapalaninen and Paulson both got in within the time cap. Upenieks and Zenoni struggled in the final yoke. The former made in with only a few seconds to spare, but the latter got capped.

Men’s Heat Two

Malheiros and Mayer were the first two athletes in heat two to clear the yoke. Mayer opted for an overhand grip in the deadlift, while Malheiros chose to go mixed grip. The Brazilian was the first athlete back to the yoke, but he would not finish in time to best Georges’ time from heat one.

Mayer crossed the finish line second in the heat at 1:56.50. Ohlsen, competing in his ninth consecutive Games, finished third in the heat at 2:19.92. Mathew and Pepper both dove over the line within half a second of each other. Koski closed right before the three-minute mark.

Spencer Panchik and Brent Fikowski got over the finish line right before the time cap, but Sager and Austin Spencer were left out on the competition floor.

Men’s Heat Three

The final heat saw the men who would likely end up on the podium clash — Medeiros, Garard, and Khrennikov. They only had to think about beating each other as the gap between them and Kwant in fourth overall was nearly 200 points.

Adler smoked the first yoke but got a no rep on the first front squat. He still maintained his lead despite Khrennikov and Medeiros right on his tail. Garard fell behind on the first yoke, and Medeiros and Khrennikov capitalized. Adler finished with an event win. Medeiros’ unbroken second yoke scored him second in the heat. Garard took 13th in the event, “bleeding points.”

Women’s Heat One

Gazan was the first athlete in heat one through the yoke walk. Prevost made moves at the deadlift portion as Kolenbrander overtook Gazan to get to the second yoke first. Kolenbrander’s lead was enough, even with an early celebration before crossing the finish line, to win the heat. Gazan finished three-tenths of a second afterward.

Fuselier was unable to move the yoke at all and appeared as though she would get time capped before event starting the event. Choi and Prevost closed the door in third and fourth, respectively. Freyová was the last athlete in the heat to finish before the time cap.

Women’s Heat Two

Barnhart and Speegle scorched the first yoke walk and broke ahead of the field. Speegle fell on her first front squat but recovered. Barnhart made fast work of the deadlifts; continued to set the pace.

Migała caught up to Barnhart by the second yoke walk, but Barnhart was just too fast. She finished in 1:24.37. Migała crossed three seconds later. Speegle finished third in the heat at 1:44.62. O’Connell got across the line at the 3:25 mark for eighth in the heat. The remaining athletes got time capped.

Women’s Heat Three

Brooke Wells got out to an early lead, with Horvath breathing down her neck. Toomey kept pace with Horvath on the deadlifts and synchronistically took the lead in the second front squats. They attacked the yoke walks together, and Horvath scored her second event win of the day. Toomey finished three seconds later and Wells five seconds after that.

Saunders crossed fourth, leaving Mal O’Brien to move through the second yoke alone. She crossed the finish line for 12th overall in the event. The rest of the heat struggled on the front squats and got capped.

One Event to Go

There is one event left at the 2022 CrossFit Games before the Fittest on Earth® are crowned. Titled “Jackie Pro,” it combines rowing, thrusters, and muscle-ups. We’ll see if Medeiros can hold off Khrennikov to win back-to-back Games titles.
