How to Watch the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships

The elite competition kicks off on May 5, 2023, in Jinju, South Korea.

The 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships (AWC) are scheduled for May 5-13, 2023, in Jinju, South Korea. The contest will feature twenty weight categories — 10 male and 10 female — in the central city of Western Gyeongsangnam-do.

The competition will take place in the Jinju Arena and will be streamed by the Asian Weightlifting Championships Jinju 2023 YouTube channel.

Below is the schedule of events occurring in Jinju, South Korea. All times are in Korea Standard Time (KST), which is 13 hours ahead of EST.

Friday, May 5, 2023

  • Women’s 45KG — Group A | Eight Athletes — 11:00 a.m.
  • Women’s 49KG — Group B | 11 Athletes — 1:00 p.m.
  • Men’s 55KG — Group A | 11 Athletes — 3:00 p.m.
  • Women’s 49KG — Group A | 11 Athletes — 6:00 p.m.

World Record Watch

With the 2023 Southeast Asia Games taking place May 5-17, 2023, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and a 2024 Paris Olympic Qualification event, the IWF Grand Prix I, occurring June 8-18, 2023, in Havana, Cuba, new world records in Jinju are unlikely but not out of the question given the caliber of the roster.

The following weight categories include the current world record holders competing at the 2023 AWC:

Men’s 61KG

  • Li Fabin (CHN)
    • Snatch — 145 kilograms — World Record
    • Clean & Jerk — 175 kilograms — World Record
    • Total — 318 kilograms — World Record

The current total world record holder for the Men’s 67-kilogram class, Chen Lijun of China, will compete at the 2023 AWC but in the 61-kilogram class at the 2023 AWC.

Men’s 73KG

  • Shi Zhiyong (CHN)
    • Snatch — 169 kilograms — World Record
    • Total — 364 kilograms — World Record

Men’s 81KG

  • Li Dayin (CHN)
    • Snatch — 175 kilograms — World Record

Men’s 96KG

  • Tian Tao (CHN)
    • Clean & Jerk — 231 kilograms — World Record

Women’s 49KG

  • Hou Zhihui (CHN)
    • Snatch — 96 kilograms — World Record
    • Total — 213 kilograms — World Record

Women’s 59KG

  • Kuo Hsing-Chun (TPE)
    • Snatch — 110 kilograms — World Record
    • Clean & Jerk — 140 kilograms — World Record
    • Total — 247 kilograms — World Record

Women’s +87KG

  • Li Wenwen (CHN)
    • Snatch — 148 kilograms — World Record
    • Clean & Jerk — 187 kilograms — World Record
    • Total — 335 kilograms — World Record

BarBend will report the 2023 AWC results throughout the competition.
