Elite powerlifter Wascar Carpio is preparing for his international sanctioned meet debut at the 2023 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Classic World Championships (CWC), scheduled for June 11-18 in Valetta, Malta. His training has gotten heavier as his preparation for the contest comes to an end.
For Carpio’s last heavy training session before flying to Malta, he achieved a 637.5-kilogram (1,405-pound) raw total, which, if he could replicate it in competition, would likely secure him the World Championship title and an invitation to the 2024 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships. Here are his stats from the session at the Iron Temple gym in Puyallup, Washington:
Wascar Carpio’s Final Training Session Before the 2023 IPF Classic World Championships | 59KG, Raw
- Squat — 225 kilograms (496 pounds)
- Bench press — 145 kilograms (319.6 pounds)
- Deadlift — 267.5 kilograms (589.7 pounds)
- Total — 637.5 kilograms (1,405 pounds)
According to Open Powerlifting, had Carpio’s above stats been scored in competition, it would be the third-heaviest raw total ever. Check out Carpio’s three big lifts that comprised his training session in the video below, courtesy of his Instagram page:

Carpio squatted 225 kilograms (496 pounds) while wearing his Team USA singlet, knee sleeves, wrist wraps, and a lifting belt. This is 7.5 kilograms (16.5 pounds) more than his competition-best squat. It appeared smooth and well within his capabilities to replicate.
On the bench press, Carpio lifted out the barbell from the rack himself. Some lifters prefer this to remove the inconsistency of having an unfamiliar handoff in competition. The 145-kilogram (320-pound) lift exceeds his competition-best bench press by 7.5 kilograms (16.5-pounds).
Carpio’s 267.5-kilogram (590-pound) deadlift was nine kilograms (20 pounds) more than his current competition best. The barbell slowed a little at lockout, but he ground through it for a successful pull.

Any weight class winners at IPF CWC who total 95 percent or more of the world record will receive an automatic invitation to the 2024 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships (SPC), scheduled for Feb. 11 in Sheffield, UK. The total world record in the 59-kilogram class is Sergi Fedosienko’s 669.5 kilograms (1,476 pounds), which has stood since June 2016.
If Carpio can recreate his 637.5-kilogram (1,405-pound) training total at the 2023 IPF CWC, it could place him at the top of the podium and qualify him for the 2024 SPC. That would be quite the additional prize to the gold as the 2024 SPC will have the largest payout in powerlifting history with a potential prize pool of £445,000 (over $554,000).
Carpio lifts in the first session of the 2023 IPF CWC at 09:00 a.m. Central European Time (CET) on Sunday, June 11. The event will be streamed live for free on the Olympics YouTube channel and run through June 18.
