Ukrainian powerlifter Anatolii Novopysmennyi has three open world championship titles to his name. At the 2024 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Classic World Championships (CWC), he met his match with USA’s Ashton Rouska in the 105KG class.
That didn’t stop Novopysmennyi from breaking some records along the way. He chipped his squat world record on his second attempt with 363.5 kilograms. But when Rouska broke it with 365.5 kilograms, Novopysmennyi responded with a colossal 370.5-kilogram IPF squat world record. Check it out below:

With knee sleeves, wrist wraps, and a lifting belt, Novopysmennyi walked out the squat efficiently, using three short steps. He has a reputation for grinding out difficult squats, but in this instance, he didn’t need to. The squat appeared comfortable and well within his capabilities.
As someone who front-loads his total, Novopysmennyi had to squeeze as many kilograms as possible out of his squat and bench press, knowing that Rouska had the bigger deadlift. Rouska had deadlifted as much as 383 kilograms in the past, compared to Novopysmennyi’s best competition pull of 352.5 kilograms.
Novopysmennyi took the bench press gold with 230 kilograms and extended his lead over Rouska by 25 kilograms. However, Rouska would make up each successive pull.
With his second deadlift, Novopysmennyi added half a kilogram to the world record. Going into the final round, Rouska was five kilograms behind. The door of opportunity swung open when Novopysmennyi’s grip failed on his final deadlift. Team USA quickly dropped Rouska’s attempt to 365 kilograms, which he did easily to win on bodyweight.
Although Rouska matched Novopsymennyi’s total at 940.5 kilograms, Novopysmennyi retained the record as he had broken it first.
