There are a few important details that make 2016 American Open potentially more impactful than previous years. First, this competition will serve as a qualifier for several important competitions in 2017.
These competitions include:
- 2017 Senior Pan American Championships in Miami, Florida USA
- 2017 FISU World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan
- 2017 Junior World Championships in Tokyo, Japan
- 2017 Junior Pan American Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador
- 2017 Youth World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand
Second, it will be the first significant international competition that will include a 90kg weight class for women. As of right now, there are 18 listed female competitors in the newly included 90kg weight category.
Will CJ Cummings be able to break his own American Records? Will Mattie Rogers be able to use the momentum she’s gained from winning the World University Opens to help spur another great performance? Time and competition will tell.
