On May 7, 2022, the 2022 World Deadlifting Council (WDC) Silver Dollar Deadlift World Championships took place at The Foundry gym in Paisley, Scotland. It was there Ben Thompson shattered the all-time silver-dollar deadlift world record by locking out 577.2 kilograms (1,272.5 pounds) to earn the overall contest victory and a place in the history books. A silver dollar deadlift is a partial deadlift with the barbell‘s starting position atop 18-inch blocks.

Thompson’s lift was so heavy that the barbell was not large enough to hold the requisite weight plates. Additional kettlebells were slung from the barbell on the knurling near Thompson’s hands. Check out Thompson’s world record lift in the video below, courtesy of his Instagram page, followed by the full contest’s results, which were made official on May 8, 2022. Thompson wore a lifting belt and lifting straps during his deadlift and used an overhand grip:

Note: in the caption of Thompson’s Instagram post, he lists the weight as 1,270 pounds. However, WDC listed his world record lift at 577.2 kilograms (1,272.5 pounds).

Thompson’s new silver dollar deadlift world record eclipsed the previous one, set by Sean Hayes on April 2, 2022, at the 2022 Strongman Corporation Canada King & Queen Of The Throne contest, by 17.2 kilograms (37.9 pounds). Hayes was also competing in Scotland against Thompson and exceeded the previous world record by a tenth of a kilogram. It was good enough for second place.
