As someone who once tipped the scales at 285 pounds, I’ll be the first to tell you that getting your nutrition right is the key to if you want to build muscle, lose body fat, and achieve your ideal physique.
After all, the “you-can’t-out-train-a-bad-diet” mantra rings true for a reason: You simply can’t expect to get the results you’re looking for if you’re not eating the right foods.
Luckily, today’s technology makes it easier than ever to stay on track—literally.
That’s exactly what makes something like the Fitia app so intriguing. An AI-powered platform that offers a wide range of user-friendly features, it’s much more than just a nutrition tracking app or calorie counter.
However, is it wise to put all your faith in an AI coach? Is it worth committing to another subscription so you know exactly what to put on your plate? In this Fitia app review, I’ll break down the platform’s standout features, highlight some of its shortcomings, and provide direct feedback from our group of expert product testers so you can decide if this is the tool you’ve been searching for all along.
If you’re looking to integrate AI with your dietary planning, consider the Fitia app. Our tester says the platform can be tailored to your specific needs and wants (even down to how the app speaks to you) and the photo-oriented tracking feature makes logging your meals a breeze. Plus, there are community threads within the app for progress sharing and added zests of motivation.
Main Takeaways
- Fitia has a fantastic set of features, including allowing you to log your food with a photo, voice-to-text, or written description. However, only premium members can take advantage of AI coaching for generating custom meal plans, recipe ideas, shopping lists, and more.
- The premium membership costs $19.99 per month or $59.99 per year for an individual plan. We appreciate that Fitia also offers a fairly affordable family plan ($89.99 per year), which can be a great way to prioritize the all-important nutrition pillar for everyone in your household.
- The app is very easy to use, and it deserves a tip of the cap for convenience. However, we have some reservations about the accuracy of calorie counting based on a photo or voice logging, especially since you can’t quantify portion sizes of specific ingredients.

From a convenient barcode scanner to an extensive food database that makes logging meals quick and easy, Fitia certainly makes tracking your calories far more convenient than the ol’ pen-and-paper approach. In particular, this app is a great option if you struggle with meal planning and recipe ideas, as the AI coach can act as your proverbial right-hand man.

“While Fitia offers plenty of AI features, what sets it apart, in my opinion, is its simplicity,” says BarBend expert contributor Sydney Lappe, MS, RDN, LDN. “Nothing feels overly complicated or cluttered, and it’s easy to move from planning meals to tracking them.”
Catering to a number of different diets—from low-fat to low-carb—the app also caters to more than just individuals. In fact, one of our favorite aspects is that you and your loved ones can utilize Fitia as a supportive tool to make better decisions about your nutrition.
“I also like that it offers a family plan and community features, since some people find accountability and shared meal planning helpful for staying consistent,” Sydney says.
Of course, none of this comes for free—at least not a majority of the features most people will want to use. The family plan allows you to add up to six members for $89.99 per year, which is a better value than paying $19.99 per month for an individual plan. Overall, this platform is fairly priced, but we wouldn’t go so far as to say it delivers the best bang for your buck.
Who Should Use / Who Shouldn’t Use the Fitia App
Tech-savvy individuals will certainly appreciate how Fitia integrates AI into their platform. However, it would be a stretch to say this app is an ideal fit for everyone. Here’s a breakdown of who it’ll work best for and who should look elsewhere for nutritional support.
Recommended for:
- Busy professionals who don’t have time to create a weekly meal plan
- On-the-go users who will appreciate the quick, convenient photo and voice-to-text logging tools
- Folks who practice intermittent fasting, as the app has built-in timers and reminders
- Families who want to make better nutritional choices
Not Recommended for:
- People who want the most accurate tool for food logging
- Anyone looking for free AI coaching, as you need a premium membership to access these features
- Those who want to work directly with a registered dietitian, nutritionist, or human coach
Our Experience With the Fitia App
We asked one of our fitness experts to put the Fitia app through our extensive testing methodology to determine where it stood out and where it fell short. In addition, we called upon registered dietitian Sydney Lappe to lend her expertise to assess the platform’s strengths and weaknesses.

Overall, our team was impressed by the simple setup process, clean interface, and array of tracking and logging capabilities. The app certainly isn’t perfect (I’ll get into that more), but it can be a helpful tool that motivates you to be more mindful of your macronutrient intake, eases the burden of meal planning and grocery shopping, and inspires you to flex (and maybe even grow) your culinary muscles.
“Comparing it to something like MyFitnessPal, this is definitely more AI-heavy and feels more hands-off since it does most of the work for you,” our expert product tester explains. “One of the coolest AI capabilities is that it creates a grocery list based on the meals it provides for you.”
Of course, everyone’s shopping cart is going to look different based on individual goals and dietary preferences or restrictions. For instance, someone may want to pack on muscle while sticking to dairy-free recipes. Someone else might want to lose weight and stay low-carb.
Our tester has no dietary restrictions and asked Fitia to create a balanced meal plan. Let’s just say she had no trouble finding something that aligned with her goals and taste buds.

“It allowed for so many options for meals—from shrimp tacos and chicken burrito bowls to beef stir fry and chicken penne,” she says. “I had a calorie goal of 2,200 to maintain my weight and health and all three meals would total this calorie goal.”
Now that you’ve got a little insight into our experience, let’s dive into some of the key areas we assessed during our in-depth evaluation process.
Price
Calorie counters and nutrition tracking apps are usually more affordable than the best workout apps, especially ones that require a significant investment for 1:1 coaching. It shouldn’t be tough to find a spot for Fitia in your monthly budget, as the individual plan costs about the same as an entree from your favorite restaurant.
But even if $19.99 seems a little steep, you can score significant savings by committing to an annual plan. At $59.99, that averages out to just $5 per month—a huge value add. As mentioned earlier, you can also sign up for a family plan for $89.99 per year. Unfortunately, the free version provides very limited access, so we wouldn’t recommend going that route.
| Feature | Free Version | Premium Version |
| Text food logging | ✓ Included | ✓ Included |
| Barcode scanning | ✓ Included | ✓ Included |
| Photo and voice food logging | ✗ Not included | ✓ Included |
| Meal plans and personalized recipes | ✗ Not included | ✓ Included |
| Custom calorie and macro targets | ✗ Not included | ✓ Included |
| Apple Health and Google Fit sync | ✗ Not included | ✓ Included |
| Progress tracking | Weight only | Weight, photos, body fat, and measurements |
| Smart calorie and meal adjustments | ✗ Not included | ✓ Included |
Furthermore, while some apps offer at least a weeklong trial period, you don’t get nearly the same amount of time with Fitia.
“A three-day free trial of Premium feels too short to decide whether the Premium features are worth paying for,” says Sydney. “But I appreciate that the app offers a warning before the trial ends, rather than charging me if I forget to cancel.”
Between the pricing structure and somewhat stingy trial period, we gave a 3 out of 5 for this category.
Ease of Use
Nobody wants to deal with an app that glitches, crashes, or is difficult to navigate. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about that with Fitia. Our team awarded it a 4-out-of-5 rating for ease of use.

“Having prior experience helped make using the app fairly simple,” our expert tester says. “The setup process took longer than anything, but I’m glad it was so thorough so it could set me up for success.”
Once you download the app, you’ll input various metrics, including your age, height, current weight, target weight, and daily activity level. You can also set your goals (lose fat, maintain weight, or build muscle), which will be used to calculate your baseline calories and macronutrient goals.
Everything is laid out in a clear, easy-to-understand format, and you can expect a frustration-free day-to-day experience.

“Things you can adjust include tailoring calorie targets and meal suggestions based on your goals, activity level, preferences, and dietary restrictions,” our tester explains. “I also really like the colorful progress tracking.”
Accuracy
Let’s face it: A nutrition tracking app is only useful if it delivers accurate data.
Is Fitia the most accurate option? We wouldn’t go that far (more on that in a bit), but it earns a respectable 3.5 out of 5 in this all-important category.
Fitia gives you several ways to record what you eat. While the convenience of AI scanning will appeal to tech-savvy and on-the-go users, you can also make your own food entries if you prefer that route or don’t see something in the database.

“It will auto calculate calories, protein, carbs, and fat based on what you enter,” our tester explains. “For example, I put eggs as my breakfast (2, large size) and it calculated all of those totals based on that. It will add this to your already picked meal plans for the day, and you select on the side which one you ate.”
For those who want the quickest route, you can also scan foods in using the AI camera.
“It seems to be accurate, but we would still want to test it with a food scale,” our tester says.
After all, it’s almost impossible to be accurate with the portion sizes of individual ingredients. This could lead to underestimating what you’re actually consuming. So, while this is ultra-convenient, it does come with some room for error.
Furthermore, Sydney had another accuracy-related callout with Fitia that’s hard to ignore.
“The app asks how many days you exercise but doesn’t seem to factor in workout duration, which could underestimate calorie targets for endurance athletes or other highly active individuals,” she explains. “During testing, I entered that I exercise 5 to 6 days per week while training for an ultramarathon, yet the app estimated only about 250 additional calories per day, which is much lower than what I actually need.”

Features and Resources
We maintain rigorous testing standards, so it speaks volumes that Fitia earned a perfect score for features and resources. Obviously, one of the biggest draws about the app is the AI technology that can help generate meal plans and recipe ideas, and even shopping lists.

“There is even helpful nutrition guidance that supports its focus on balanced eating and consistency without making me feel overwhelmed,” our tester explains. “It also allows easy meal swaps, portion adjustments, and custom food entries. It really does make the plan feel personalized.”
One aspect that I personally appreciate is the inclusion of intermittent fasting timers. I’m a big proponent of IF—I’ve followed One Meal a Day (OMAD) for several years—but I understand it can be challenging for folks who aren’t used to this restricted way of eating. Having a built-in timer that reminds you when it’s time to break your fast can help you stick to a consistent schedule and support long-term results.
As for the meal plans themselves? Our tester was more than satisfied with Fitia’s suggestions.

“Protein-rich meals help create fullness, which is great because I am always hungry,” she explains. “The recipes are straightforward and include simple ingredients. The instructions are simple and easy to follow!”
Community
While it didn’t quite earn a perfect score, we feel comfortable awarding Fitia 4 stars for community. For those who struggle with accountability, this app can help keep you on track.
“There are great visuals to help with daily calorie and macronutrient tracking, progress charts, streaks, and goal reminders,” our tester says. “There is a social tab that allows people to post progress pictures and connect with others going through similar experiences.”
In addition, you can create and join groups to connect with other users in your area.
“I feel like the app helps you develop healthy eating habits that can be maintained long after you stop using the app, making it a useful tool for building sustainable nutrition habits rather than following a short-term diet,” our tester explains.
Sydney also sees great value in this community-focused platform.
“I also like that it offers a family plan and community features, since some people find accountability and shared meal planning helpful for staying consistent,” she says.
What to Consider Before Buying the Fitia App
While there are plenty of attractive features about the Fitia App, that doesn’t mean you should just sign up for a subscription immediately. Here are some factors to keep in mind as you consider whether this is the right tool for you:
- Free vs. Premium: The free version supports basic nutrition tracking, but the features people will benefit from the most—personalized meal plans, barcode scanning, voice logging, custom macro targets, and detailed progress tracking—require a Premium subscription.
- Tracking accuracy: The convenience of photo, voice, and AI food logging will make life easier for busy folks. However, the estimates may be inaccurate, especially because it’s difficult to quantify portion sizes.
- Your goals and eating habits: Fitia is best suited for people who want to be diligent about their caloric intake. You should consider whether the app accommodates your dietary preferences, as you’ll be less likely to use it if the meals don’t appeal to your taste buds.
Fitia App Vs. Competitors
There are plenty of intuitive apps available that can support your nutrition tracking needs. Fitia is certainly a viable option, especially if you like the idea of letting AI do a lot of the heavy lifting.
However, you can also consider two other BarBend favorites: Cronometer and MacroFactor. Here’s a high-level overview of what each platform brings to the table.
| Fitia | Cronometer | MacroFactor | |
| Price | Free plan available; $19.99 per month or $59.99 per year for individual plan, $89.99 per year for family plan | Free; Cronometer Gold is $10.99/month or $59.99/year | $11.99/month or $71.99/year |
| Free Trial Period | Free version available; 3-day trial for Premium | 30-day free trial of Cronometer Gold | 7-day trial |
| Subscription | Monthly or annually | Monthly or annually | Monthly or annually |
| Diet types supported | Smart Diet, High Protein, Low Carb, Keto, Low Fat | Any diet type | Any diet type |
| Custom meal plans | Yes | No | No |
| Compatible With | iOS, Android | iOS, Android | iOS, Android |
Cronometer takes tracking even deeper, as it does a great job of accounting for your micronutrient intake, too. As a certified personal trainer and lifelong athlete, I’ll be the first to tell you that this is one of the most overlooked aspects of health and fitness, so I love that Cronometer focuses on more than just macros. After all, you should be diligent about everything from your water intake to whether you’re getting sufficient vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
In addition, you can track your measurements, heart rate, blood pressure, and even your mood and sleep. Similar to Fitia, there’s a free version available with limited features. Cronometer Gold costs $10.99 per month or $59.99 per year, making it more affordable than Fitia.
Alternatively, you could look into MacroFactor, which kind of falls in between from a price perspective. Described as “super intuitive and simple to use” by our expert product tester, this platform has a verified food database where you can scan a barcode for quick logging. We gave MacroFactor a perfect score for features and resources.
“This is the only app I’ve seen with an algorithm that calculates your actual energy expenditure based on food intake and weight changes, allowing you to set the exact goal you want with a timeline, and the app will adjust things as needed to keep you on track,” one of our expert product testers notes.
Places to Buy the Fitia App
You can download Fitia for iOS from the App Store or for Android from the Google Play Store. You can upgrade to Fitia Premium directly in the app and complete your purchase through the App Store or Google Play.
Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews
Fitia has earned an average score of 4.9 out of 5 stars on the App Store based on more than 19,000 ratings. Meanwhile, it has a 4.8-star rating on the Google Play store based on more than 432,000 reviews.
While that average review score is impressive, we’d be remiss without pointing out that many recent reviews report technical difficulties with the AI. In addition, there are several complaints about hidden costs since you have to buy “coins” to use the meal planning features.
Based on our research, it’s unclear how much these coins cost, but you’ll need to buy more if you run out of your monthly allotment and want to create a new meal plan or receive new recipes. So, Premium users will need to account for that added expense.
Final Thoughts on the Fitia App
The Fitia App leverages the power of AI to help you make more informed eating decisions. We appreciate the convenience of being able to snap a picture of your food and have a generally good idea of how many calories you’re eating.
However, you should also exercise some mild caution about relying solely on this method of tracking your food intake. Discrepancies in portion sizes can lead you to believe you’re eating fewer calories than what you actually are, and that isn’t exactly a recipe for success.
That being said, I still think it’s better to have some type of tool than none at all. So, if Fitia fits into your budget, it can be a great addition to your lineup of apps. Whether you want to lose weight or make your muscle gain goals come to fruition.
