Coronavirus Pandemic Triggers 2020 CrossFit German Throwdown Postponement

Yet another European event having to adjust for preventative measures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) made the assessment on March 11th that the coronavirus (COVID-19) can be considered a pandemic. Multiple CrossFit Sanctionals™️ competitions have already made the decision to either cancel or postpone until a date to be determined, and in the case of the 2020 CrossFit Italian Showdown, even move online.

The German CrossFit Throwdown is the eleventh CrossFit Sanctionals™️ competition of the 2020 season and was originally scheduled for March 28-29th in Berlin. However, it is now another addition to the growing list of events that will be postponed until later this year.

In their press release, they state:

“Due to the rapid spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) the responsible health authority of the district of Treptow-Köpenick in Berlin has ordered that the event has to be cancelled.”

These were not unforeseen circumstances for the event organizers and they were able to adapt to the cancellation mandate stating:

“Right at the beginning of the outbreak of the coronavirus in Germany we worked out a Plan B to be prepared for all eventualities. That is why we are happy to not have to cancel the event but that it will take place at a later point.”

At the time of this article, there has not yet been any information released regarding what future dates are being considered. The press release did say that more information will be communicated “in the coming days.”

The 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games

The CrossFit Games have also had to contend with how to proceed amidst the pandemic. Currently, the CrossFit Games are scheduled for July 29th through August 2nd in Madison, WI. CrossFit HQ made the announcement that they are monitoring the situation closely stating:

“At this time, with the CrossFit Games more than four months away, event planning procedures include patient observation of the coronavirus (COVID-19). If circumstances closer to the event require action, our teams will coordinate with local authorities and share relevant event information as appropriate.”
