The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) 2023 World Junior Powerlifting Championships are fast approaching. The mammoth contest will take place over 11 days in Cluj Napoca, Romania, starting on Aug. 24, 2023, beginning with four days of equipped lifting before the classic event.

A total of 655 athletes representing 55 countries are on the roster in the Sub-Junior (age 14-18) and Junior (age 19-23) categories. Every session will be streamed live and for free on the IPF YouTube channel and on their Facebook page.

Athletes to Watch

There is an ever-changing landscape in the Junior and Sub-Junior competitions as athletes move through the age classes and, often, weight categories. Two familiar faces will be absent this year: Zuzanna Kula and Sonja-Stefanie Krüger have both moved to the Open category after dominating the Junior division for years.

The Junior championships always bring new faces. Below are some of the most notable to watch:

  • Emily Finnern — silver medallist at the Open Equipped World Championships
  • Ivan Campano Diaz — silver medallist at the Open Classic World Championships
  • Temur Samkharadze — Junior world record holder in deadlift (385.5 kilograms (850 pounds))
  • Erholove Izobodo-John — has been building a huge deadlift in prep for this meet
  • Lystus Ebosele — looks set to break records in the +84KG class
