Two-time world champion Brittany Schlater hit the platform on Sept. 14, 2024, at the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) national championships. While she is a great all-around powerlifter, her deadlift is second to none.
Schlater put in respectable numbers for squat and bench press: not quite her best, but not too far off. She pushed herself on the deadlift, scoring a colossal 273.5-kilogram deadlift on her final pull. Check out the lift below, courtesy of Schlater’s Instagram page:
Schlater deadlifts with the aid of a lifting belt but no other supportive equipment. She sets up in a conventional stance and takes the barbell in a mixed grip. Once she begins the lift, the weight moves smoothly from the floor to lockout with no sign of a sticking point. Schlater’s coaches, Bryce Krawczyk and Garrett Bentley, celebrated on the sidelines.
Schlater ranked first in her weight class and won the best lifter award with 119.08 GL points. She exceeded the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) raw deadlift world record.
Schlater has seemed within reach of this record for the last couple of years, but circumstances often dictate the number on the bar for the final lift. If fighting for position, records, even world records, is a secondary consideration.
Schlater broke the record at the 2024 IPF Classic World Championships in Druskininkai, Lithuania, with 269.5 kilograms, but Australia’s Natalie Laalaai immediately took it back with 273 kilograms.
In the caption, Schlater shared that she felt burnt out and had not put as much effort into her competition prep as usual.
I scraped by doing the bare minimum for 10 weeks, unsure of the path to take. I’m ready to try trying again.
However, Schlater seems to be on the way to rediscovering her love for powerlifting and her drive to excel in the sport.
