Following the news that Shawn Ramirez and Jaime McGarva, two podium finishers at the 50-54 division Masters CrossFit Games, violated the CrossFit drug policy, another name has been added to the list.
- On October 24, CrossFit announced that 40-44 Masters CrossFit Games champion Jonathan Edel has tested positive for PEDs as well.
His sample tested positive for Anastrozole, exogenous steroids (synthetic testosterone), and metabolites of GW1516.

- As stated on the CrossFit Games website, “Edel did not appeal and has received a four-year sanction starting Sept. 1, 2024.”
At the time of publication, all three men remain on the leaderboard in their original finishing places (here and here).
- Edel’s sanction began when the positive sample was submitted. Now, Chicho Quesada moves up into first place in the 40-44 division, Julian Serna is in second, and two-time Masters CrossFit Games champion Rudy Berger moves into third.

McGarva’s positive test (containing metabolites of GW1516) was announced on October 4, and he is not appealing. Ramirez’s test (containing dihydroxy-LGD-4033, a metabolite of LGD-4033) was revealed on October 24. He has chosen to appeal, meaning his “b sample” will be tested.
“As someone who was denied the ability to stand on the podium [in 2018 due to Ramirez], I’m happy to see Crossfit going after this. I feel for my peers who had that podium experience taken from them by these selfish individuals,” 5-time CrossFit Games Masters Champion Jason Grubb told the Morning Chalk Up in an exclusive statement.
- Grubb continued: “There are so many of us that pour our hearts and souls into the sport. The use of PEDs by some at the 2024 CrossFit Games and in previous years undermines the competition and belittles the honest efforts of the vast majority of Masters athletes. It falsely suggests that all Masters athletes cheat, which I know isn’t true.”
- Note: This is the second time Ramirez has been found in violation of the CrossFit Drug Policy. The previous occurrence was in 2018, and Ramirez served a reduced two-year sentence after successfully demonstrating he had consumed a tainted supplement.
If both McGarva and Ramirez are removed from the current leaderboard, Joel Hughes will move into second place, and Jason Leeves will move into third.
