World records continue to fall at the 2022 International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Classic Championships in Sun City, South Africa. In the Women’s categories — buckle up — Tiffany Chapon set three new IPF world records in the 47-kilogram class, Heather Connor broke her own IPF deadlift world record, Joy Nnamani and Jessica Buettner hit IPF raw deadlift records in the 57-kilogram and 76-kilogram classes, respectively, Bobbie Butters broke her previous IPF squat world record at 57-kilograms, Donna Berglund racked up a new IPF bench press world record in that same class, Agata Sitko locked out a new IPF bench press world record at 76-kilograms, and Pleun Dekkers, Farhanna Farid, and Noémie Allabert each hit IPF world records in the 52-kilogram class.
On the Men’s side, in the 66-kilogram class, Jonathan Garcia of the USA set a new IPF raw squat world record, and Eddie Berglund of Sweden tallied a new IPF world record total on June 7, 2022. Garcia weighed in officially at 65.75 kilograms and lifted an IPF world record 271 kilograms (597.5 pounds). The IPF shared a video of the historic squat on their Instagram page. Check it out below:

Garcia’s lift beat the previous record set by Charles Okpoko at the 2019 IPF World Classic Championships. While Garcia broke the squat record, he went on to place second in the meet to champion Eddie Berglund, who was the other world record lifter to make headlines.
Berglund, weighing in at 66 kilograms exactly, may not have had the best squat that day, but he finished with the best raw total for his class in IPF history. His total of 710 kilograms (1,565.5 pounds) was five kilograms more than the mark Okpoko set at the same meet he set the squat record. This performance was Berglund’s first world championship win. The Swedish powerlifter’s overall day that led to his new record total is as follows:
2022 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships — Eddie Berglund | 66KG
- Squat — 250 kilograms (552 pounds)
- Bench Press — 202.5 kilograms (446.5 pounds)
- Deadlift — 257.5 kilograms (567 pounds)
- Total — 710 kilograms (1,565.5 pounds)
The deadlift is a new competition best for Berglund. According to Open Powerlifting, Berglund’s highest placing in the open category at an IPF World Classic Championships is third in 2021. He was disqualified in the 2019 meet due to missing all three attempts on the bench press. He won the 2018 IPF Junior World Classic Championships.
