USA weightlifter Katherine Nye (-71kg) is gearing up for the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Weightlifting Championships, which are taking place September 18th through the 27th in Pattaya, Thailand. And what better way to make her case ahead of a major qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games then showing off a massive clean of 142kg/312lb during training.
Nye completed this huge PR over the weekend, and it’s fair to say we’re excited to see what she brings to the platform in the next couple weeks.
For context, this clean PR is 5kg over Nye’s 137kg clean & jerk from the IWF Junior World Championships in June, and 7kg over her 135kg clean & jerk from the Pan American Championships in April.
Check out her clean PR and what she wrote about it below,
“142kg/312lb clean PR what it do baybeeeee”
Nye has already had quite the dominant year for Team USA. In April, she was crowned the Pan American Champion, then in June she was crowned the IWF Junior World Champion. Last month, she was named to Team USA’s roster for the IWF World Weightlifting Championships, and since then has been incredibly open about her training and mental battles during this intense competition stretch.
She openly discussed in August that she had been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder and “mild” ADHD, and how this period of training ahead of worlds will also be the beginning of her active recovery and treatment for her recent diagnosis.
The IWF World Weightlifting Championships are a gold-level qualifying event ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which means this event is one of the last major competitions for Olympic hopefuls.
On top of her recent clean PR, Nye has also his a few beltless snatch PRs. She snatched 101kg/222lb for a couple of beltless PR singles. She wrote under her snatch PR, “feeling completely different lately and I’m super excited about it. We leave next week for worlds, it’s getting REAL and I’m starting to feel READY.”
We’re looking forward to all the action about to go down in Thailand, and we’ll be sure to update you with all the results from Nye and team USA.
