The next stop on the global road to the 2020 CrossFit Games is across the Atlantic. London, England will be hosting the 2020 Strength in Depth UK event January 24th, 25th, and 26th. This is the United Kingdom’s only Sanctional on the schedule so for several of the athletes that are from that part of the world, this will be their best chance to qualify for Madison later this summer.
This event will have men’s, women’s, and team events so all three fields will have a qualifying position available for the highest finisher not already qualified. On the men’s side, the most notable entrant is the reigning and defending four-time CrossFit Games Champion Mat Fraser.
Fraser is already qualified for the Games thanks to his US National Championship in the Open. He actually placed 2nd overall. This will be his first Sanctional that he takes part in this season. Other notable men in the field includes Will Moorad, Bronislaw Olenkowicz, who actually won this event in 2019, and Roman Khrennikov.
As for the women’s field, 2019 winner Sara Sigmundsdottir will not be defending her title but former CrossFit Games runner-up Laura Horvath will compete in London. She is also the Fittest Woman in Hungary five times over and is coming off a 10th place overall finish in the Open. So she is competing for the title and other reasons than the qualification but her being in it makes her a favorite. Other notable female competitors include 19 year old Hayley Adams who was 6th at the 2019 CrossFit Games, Fittest Woman in Poland Gabriela Migala, and Steph Chung who was recently 6th at the Mayhem Classic.
The highlight of the Teams lineup is the four-time Games winners Mayhem Freedom which is led by the other four-time Fittest Man on Earth Rich Froning. No other teams have been announced yet, but obviously this one is the odds on favorite.
The events have been announced on the SiDUK Instagram page and they are listed below in the expected order that they will be performed. Day 1 will involve weights and running, Day 2 will start in the water and a lot of repetitions. The weekend concludes with various tasks including rope climbs, handstand walking, and worm thrusters, among other activities.
