The 2022 Arnold Amateur Strongman Championships (AASMC) and 2022 Arnold Amateur Strongwoman Championships (AASWC) took place on March 4-5, 2022, at the 2022 Arnold Sports Festival (ASF). Amateur strongman and strongwoman competitions are the proving grounds for advancing to elite competitions. Several of the current strongmen competing in the sport’s biggest competitions started in amateur contests like those at the ASF, including 2021 Shaw Classic champion Trey Mitchell, two-time World’s Strongest Man (WSM) runner-up Mateusz Kieliszkowski, and Evgeny Markov.

Open Divisions

Carrasquillo’s performance at the 2022 AASWC was dominant. She tied for first place in the Deadlift Ladder event with five reps on the 184-kilogram barbell, 184-kilogram axle bar, and 220-kilogram axle car. She was the lone strongwoman to complete the Wheelbarrow Medley, which consisted of a 100-kilogram sandbag and a 236-kilogram wheelbarrow carry for 15 meters each, with a time of 21.86 seconds. She tossed all four bags that ranged from nine to 16 kilograms over the 4.27-meter bar in 14.98 seconds for first place points.

Once the 2022 AASWC got to the final three events, it was an absolute runaway for Carrasquillo. She posted 15 reps in the Axle Press — 10 more than the second-place De Pinto, 10 reps in the Squat Lift of 175 kilograms, and hoisted a 159 kilogram stone — 39 kilograms more than the runner-up Koolen.

Evans’ performance was one of consistency. He finished third in the Deadlift ladder and fourth in the Wheelbarrow Medley and Bag Over Bar before claiming his first event win in the Axle Press Ladder, where he scored seven reps. He then won the Squat Lift, tieing Kopp with 8 reps of 297 kilograms. Those two would tie again in the Stone Over Bar with Plankers and Good — all four men successfully lifted 213 kilograms.

Lightweight & Middleweight Divisions

Candito’s path to the U105 crown was one of consistency. Not only did he win two of the six events — the Deadlift Ladder and the Stone Over Bar — he never finished lower than fourth in any event. Marroquin also won two events — the Axle Press Ladder and the Squat Lift — but it was a ninth-place finish in the Wheelbarrow Carry that left the top of the podium open for Candito to claim.

Hanus’ climb to the top of the U80 podium was one of dominance throughout most of the competition. He won four of six events, finishing fourth in the Deadlift Ladder and second in the Squat Lift. While Kowalewski won the Squat Lift and never finished worse than fourth in any event, it wasn’t enough to knock Hanus off the top spot.

Belliveau ran the rare perfect game, winning all six events in the U82 competition — notably tying Johnson and Theaker in the Stone Over Bar at 120 kilograms. Theaker finished in second or third place for four events, with the outlier being a seventh-place rank in the Axle Press Ladder and the first-place tie in the Stone Over Bar.

McRae never found herself atop the podium of any event until the Stone Over Bar, but her consistent performance through the other five events allowed her to narrowly best Brennan by less than a point for the gold. Brennen won the squat lift event by lifting 129 kilograms for 20 reps. Woods and Olivera both won two events. Woods was victorious in the Deadlift Ladder, Olivera was the winner of the Bag Over Bar, and they split first place in the Axle Press Ladder.
