2023 TYR Wodapalooza Team Event Preview: “Kitchen Sync — Part B”

In part one of this two-part finale, work capacity and precision are the keys to success.

The 2023 TYR Wodapalooza (WZA) in Miami, FL, occurs Jan. 13-15, 2023. The Teams division competition includes workouts that challenge the three-member teams to various fitness tests. The final event is called “Kitchen Sync,” announced on Jan. 11, 2023. Check out BarBend‘s preview on part A of the workout. Below is what to expect from part B:

Picks to Win | Male Team: Le Boiz — Jonne Koski, James Newbury, Nick Mathew

The last workout of the weekend will be spicy. The bookend movements require three-person synchronization, while the middle section is three all-out sprints on the bike. Will the snatches and burpees create more opportunities for separation for the small, fast teams? Or will the big powerful teams make up the difference and then some on the bike?

This team could be the sneaky blend of both. The similar size and build of the three should be favorable for the snatches and burpees. They can also burn it down on the bike when needed (“Ringer 1” James Newbury from the 2019 CrossFit Games, anyone?). By picking Le Boiz to win, we’re favoring the snatches and burpees more heavily than the bike. Even if it’s the other way around, Le Boiz should have a strong close to the weekend.

Pick to Win | Female Team: Team BPN — Laura Horvath, Gabriela Migała, Jamie Simmonds

One of the contenders to win the competition might need an event win in the eleventh hour. This feels like the perfect workout for this team, given their insanely high work capacity. Horvath and Migała can burn it down on the bike, and all three of them will be at warp speed with the dumbbell and burpees.

It will be an epic final, where seconds will separate several teams. However, if Team BPN has a smooth run, we like their chances as much as anyone to end the weekend with an event win.

Dark Horses | Male Team: Training Culture Team — Aniol Ekai, Alexander Anasagasti, Pablo Cazalis

The top team from the online qualifier should be solid amongst all the superstar teams throughout the weekend. Training Culture had four finishes of third or better out of seven scored events in the qualifiers, showing a variety of top-end performances. They’ve all been training together in Spain for much of this off-season.

Anasagasti and Cazalis have team experience from the Games and were in Dubai supporting Ekai in December 2022. This team has a good balance of experience, fitness, camaraderie, and intensity, which will be on full display for the finale.

Dark Horses | Female Team: CrossFit Omnia- Kelly Stone, Elisa Schauer, MaryKay Dreisilker

The women from the seventh-place team at the Games in 2022 (Schauer and Dreisilker) picked up the eighth-place finisher from a stacked field of women at the Granite Games. They’ll have power on the bike from Schauer and Stone.

Although she has had more success on a team, Dreisilker strung together impressive performances in back-to-back Opens in 2020 (35th) and 2021 (56th). If these three can match each other’s intensity with the dumbbell and burpees, they could pick up a few valuable seconds on the bike, moving up the leaderboard on the last event.
