While the best rowing machines can be excellent cardio-burning vessels for at-home training — even surpassing calories burned in vigorous calisthenics — they can still be large pieces of equipment to add to your space. (1) The Hydrow Wave, however, delivers a smooth rowing experience without stretching dimensions too far. For comparison, the Hydrow Wave is 6 inches shorter and 6 inches thinner than its predecessor, the original Hydrow Pro rower.
Given its immersive training experience powered through the Hydrow app, stable frame design, and more compact silhouette, we feel the Hydrow Wave is one of the best compact rowing machines available today, especially beneficial for athletes training in small spaces. However, there are some key points that may make this smaller, tech-riddled rower a less ideal fit for your needs. So, let’s dive into our findings gathered from hands-on testing and expert insight and get to the finer details in this Hydrow Wave rower review.
This luxury rower is equipped with a 16-inch touchscreen display and offers automatic adjustments to the resistance based on your rowing efforts.
Hydrow Wave Rower Video Review
BarBend’s Jake Herod, NASM-CNC, tested the Hydrow Wave Rower firsthand in the BarBend garage gym. Follow along to his detailed video review as he breaks down everything there is to know about this rowing machine.
Main Takeaways
- The Hydrow Wave features a smaller 80-inch length that can be great for athletes living in smaller spaces.
- This rower is compatible with the Hydrow app, which offers more than 5,000 on-demand workouts and immersive scenic waterways.
- The “Just Row” module is somewhat underwhelming, meaning you’ll want to subscribe to the Hydrow app if you want to get the most out of this machine.
Hydrow Wave Highlights
- Price: $1,695
- Product Dimensions: 80″ L x 19″ W x 43″ H
- Product Weight: 102lbs
- Weight Capacity: 375lbs
- Resistance Type: Electromagnetic
- Monitor Size: 16”
At $1,695, the Hydrow Wave is one of the more affordable compact rowing machines on the market today. However, this cost does not include the monthly subscription to the Hydrow app, which we recommend signing up for. The $44 monthly membership gives you access to over 5,000 workouts catering to different disciplines including yoga, circuit training, and others.
For the rowing workouts, we appreciate the on-water scenery, which we feel provides a calming backdrop in contrast to the in-studio aesthetic of other fitness platforms, like NordicTrack or Peloton.
These engaging virtual training courses unfold on a 16-inch HD touchscreen. “The console is super easy to use, and I had no real issues navigating through the interface outside of a few lagging experiences as my chosen workouts began to load,” adds Lauren Keary, BarBend editorial team member and former collegiate rower. “In all, though, the lag was just a few seconds and not a real detriment in the long run.”
We also want to point out that while the Hydrow Wave’s touchscreen is capable of streaming off-rower workouts, the display does not swivel or rotate for easier viewing angles. That feature is found on the original Hydrow rower (which we’ve also reviewed), so you’ll need to consider whether this added convenience is worth the extra $500.
From a frame and build perspective, the Hydrow Wave is surprisingly stable despite its shorter dimensions. This Hydrow rowing machine’s smaller footprint measures in at 10.56 square feet. For reference, that’s less of a footprint than your standard loveseat (15.31 square feet). (2) The machine itself also weighs 102 pounds and comes with front transport wheels to help with transport.
Unlike its predecessor, the Hydrow Wave utilizes a polycarbonate material throughout its frame design. This can help cut the machine’s overall weight without sacrificing durability — both the Hydrow Wave and original Hydrow Pro feature a weight capacity of 375 pounds.
This choice of material also gives the Hydrow Wave a unique color assortment, which is a rarity amongst the best cardio machines. Athletes have the choice of River Blue, Forest Green, Sunrise Yellow, and Sunset Orange, in addition to a sleek Pirate Black silhouette, which can be a nice perk for those looking to house their rowing in their normal living spaces like an office or living room.
Resistance-wise, the Hydrow Wave uses an electromagnetic flywheel that helps generate a smooth rowing stroke in each movement. “I love this magnetic resistance setup as it’s pretty quiet, too,” adds Keary. “You can easily get a workout in without disturbing your fellow housemates.”
Finally, the Hydrow Wave is capable of upright storage, but we do wish the vertical storage kit was available with the base bundle rather than as a $190 add-on. This kit is practically a requirement, too, if you have younger children running or pets running around your house.
Pros
- Compact frame can still accommodate athletes up to 6’6”
- Hydrow app features a wide variety of on-rower and off-rower workouts
- Surprisingly stable and durable despite its smaller silhouette
Cons
- Monthly Hydrow membership is practically required for optimal use
- Vertical storage kit sold separately
- Frame length of 80’’ may still be too short for taller individuals
Training With the Hydrow Wave
For our testing needs, we took on multiple low-impact cardio workouts with the Hydrow Wave to determine how its performance benefited or hindered our home exercise regimens. We took our time in examining the available features, ergonomics, and electromagnetic resistance levels to ensure that all bases were covered during trials.
We used a multi-point methodology to rate the Hydrow Wave in categories such as overall footprint, available tech, dynamic programming, durability, and more, scoring them on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). For further information on how we trial and test products for our online content, be sure to read the BarBend Equipment Testing Methodology.
Rock-Solid Stability
While it’s easy to think of even the best compact exercise equipment as dainty or less durable than their more robust counterparts, the Hydrow Wave sheds that preconceived notion thanks to its stable design and resilient thermoplastic polymer frame material. Despite its shorter rail length, our tester, a certified personal trainer, had no issues with wobbles or swaying, even as they ramped up their Hydrow workouts to higher intensities.
“I was also really impressed with the weight capacity — it’s nice to see the brand have the same weight rating with this Hydrow Wave as it has with the original, heavier Hydrow Pro,” they added in reference to their 4 out of 5 rating.
We also appreciate this polycarbonate design, as it cuts weight from the frame itself leading to better portability. We scored the Hydrow Wave at 4.5 out of 5 for the category, as getting this rower into position for a session is far more achievable than other silhouettes we’ve tried.
However, Lauren Keary, BarBend editorial team member and former collegiate rower, has a key callout when trying to move this machine from one room to the next. “If you unplug the rower for transport, it won’t stay connected to the Wi-Fi. You’ll need to log back in once you set the rower up in your new desired location.”
Fluid Resistance Levels
Another perk to the Hydrow Wave is its fluid functionality. Unlike other high-quality rowing machines that utilize a chain drive to connect the handlebars to the flywheel, the Hydrow Wave uses a nylon strap that retracts during workouts. This can help create a seamless transition between the different parts of your rowing stroke — the catch, drive, finish, and recovery.
We also rated the resistance at 4 out of 5 thanks to its similarity to on-water rowing. Our tester noted that each stroke felt as if they were paddling against water, giving their sessions a real-world feel from the comforts of their home gym.
We’ve had similar experiences with some of the best magnetic rowing machines, but the simplicity and ease of use built into the Hydrow’s electromagnetic resistance system has been a true standout in our time within this fitness equipment category.
Hydrow App Integration
Of course, one of the main selling points to this Hydrow Wave rower (outside of its more compact frame) is the integration with the Hydrow app for on-demand workouts. In testing, we really enjoyed this digital experience, rating the dynamic programming at 5 out of 5. The sessions are led by renowned instructors, and the on-water backdrop of each module provides a calming sensation that you just can’t replicate in a studio setup.
The Hydrow app also gives you access to weekly challenges and races, which can be beneficial when looking to gain a spark of motivation. After all, a rowing machine is only effective if you use it, so races, leaderboards, and challenges can be a good way to entice you into daily workouts.
The Hydrow Wave is also compatible with Bluetooth, meaning you can pair your headphones or heart rate monitor to the console. You’re also able to stream your progress and workout performance to some of the best fitness apps with your all-access membership, which can be great for athletes wanting to tally their training totals across multiple disciplines.
We will note, though, that all the perks mentioned above are only available through a Hydrow app membership. While the Hydrow Wave does offer a “Just Row” mode that doesn’t require a subscription, you will not be able to save workout totals or even connect to different training platforms unless you buy into the branded platform.
Plus, it’s important to remember that the Hydrow Wave’s 16-inch HD touchscreen does not swivel for easier viewing in off-rower workouts. If you’re a fan of the Hydrow app’s other modules for strength training, yoga, HIIT, and more, it may be best to opt for the more expensive Hydrow Pro rower, which features a swiveling screen. Otherwise, you’ll need to set up directly behind your Hydrow Wave, which may not be possible in tighter quarters.
What to Consider Before Buying the Hydrow Wave
According to Amanda Capritto, our expert reviewer, “Rowing is an effective form of exercise, engaging most of the body’s muscles and significantly working the cardiovascular system.” As such, there are a few key components to think through before pulling the trigger on a new Hydrow Wave rower for your space.
Available Space
Any piece of gym equipment — whether it’s the Hydrow Wave, one of the best treadmills, or a simple set of dumbbells — can be rendered useless if you cannot fit it in your home gym. Be sure to measure how much floor space you have available and ensure that the Hydrow Wave’s 10.56-square-foot footprint won’t extend beyond the allotted area.
In addition to the rowing machine’s dimensions, it can also be wise to juxtapose the slide rail length to your personal height. Taller athletes can require longer rail systems in order to facilitate complete repetitions. According to Hydrow, the Wave rower can support athletes up to a 36-inch inseam, which translates to roughly 6’6” in height. While this is definitely impressive given the compact profile, we recommend athletes taller than 6’6” opt for a rowing machine with a longer slide rail.
Storage Features
Capritto states that in addition to the Hydrow Wave’s footprint, “You’ll also need to ensure the machine is relatively easy to move if you won’t be able to leave it stationary.” While the Hydrow Wave is lightweight at 102 pounds and does feature front transport wheels, the storage features end there.
The frame does not fold up for a more compact silhouette, and the vertical anchor kit that allows for upright storage is sold separately. If you need a profile that can be tucked away when not in use, it may be best to select a rower that already comes with such features.
Dynamic Programming
Having access to dynamic programming can be an excellent way to keep your workout routine fresh throughout the days and weeks. Even if your rower just has a few preset programs, that can be useful in helping users cultivate a routine.
In addition to the Hydrow Wave’s “Just Row” module that is its de-facto manual mode, this home gym equipment is compatible with the brand’s Hydrow app, which offers more than 5,000 trainer-led workouts across over 100 on-water locations from around the world. Plus, the Hydrow app regularly features races, in-workout leaderboards, and challenges that can give you an added sense of competition throughout your regimen.
Be mindful, though, that access to this platform is only possible through a monthly subscription. The Hydrow app service will cost $44 for all-access privileges, so you’ll need to plan for that extra expense when totaling the official price tag of this profile.

Color Scheme
Finally, one of the more unique metrics to consider with the Hydrow Wave is which color you’d like your rower to come in. Thanks to its thermoplastic polymer frame, Hydrow is able to offer the Wave in a multitude of color schemes unlike its original model that features more stainless steel and hard plastic.
You can choose between Pirate Black, River Blue, Forest Green, Sunrise Yellow, and Sunset Orange. If you plan on adding the Hydrow Wave to your list of living room décor, adding a splash of color could be a worthwhile consideration.
Hydrow Wave Vs. The Competition
In our experience with over 15 different rowing machines over the years, we’ve found plenty of silhouettes that can be suitable for a wide range of fitness journeys and living arrangements. While the Hydrow Wave is a clear standout, in our opinion, there still exist a few worthwhile contenders. Below are three different rowing machine profiles we think stack up competitively to the Hydrow Wave — the Aviron Strong Series Rower, Echelon Row-S, and Concept2 RowERG.
Hydrow Wave | Aviron Strong Series Rower | Echelon Row-S | Concept2 RowERG | |
Price: | $1,695 | $2,199 | $1,899.99 | $990 |
Product Dimensions: | 80″ L x 19″ W x 43″ H | 84” L x 27” W x 48” H | 84″ W x 21″ L x 45″ H | 95” L x 24” W x 14” H |
Product Weight: | 102lbs | 114lbs | 123lbs | 57lbs |
Weight Capacity: | 375lbs | 507lbs | 350lbs | 500lbs |
Resistance Type: | Electromagnetic | Dual air and magnetic | Magnetic | Air |
Monitor Size: | 16” | 22” | 22” | N/A |
As one of my favorite rowers on the market today, the Aviron Strong Series Rower poses a definite challenge to the Hydrow Wave. While the Strong Series Rower is slightly longer at 84 inches, the entire profile can be stored upright without the need for additional hardware.
Plus, I feel the gamified training platform available through Aviron is great for beginners, giving athletes an arcade-like feel in each workout rather than an on-water experience. However, the price point is the main factor in this comparison — the Aviron Strong Series is roughly $500 more than the Hydrow Wave.
The Echelon Row-S is also a compact rower that’s caught our attention as of late thanks to its foldable frame for more convenient storage. The Row-S also features a larger screen (22 inches compared to 16 inches), but we feel the programming is better with Hydrow. “I noticed that a lot of the trainers weren’t showcasing proper rowing form, which could be detrimental for those just getting started in the discipline,” added our tester, a certified personal trainer.
Lastly, the Concept2 RowErg is among the best home gym equipment we’ve tested, featuring an air-powered flywheel, minimalist display console, and durable frame capable of supporting up to 500 pounds. This is routinely our go-to pick for rowing machines, although we understand the appeal of trainer-led programming — a feature not available with this Concept2 offering.
Additionally, Lauren Keary, BarBend editorial team member and former collegiate rower, raises some noise concerns when it comes to air-driven rowers. “They’re a bit noisy, so I wouldn’t recommend them for those living with roommates or children — you’re essentially working out with a commercial-grade fan,” she adds.
Places to Buy the Hydrow Wave
The Hydrow Wave is available directly from the brand’s online retail site as well as Amazon.
Customer Experience
In terms of ordering the Hydrow Wave, it’s a simple online transaction — choose your rower, decide on any accessories, choose your membership subscription contract, and finalize your order. Unlike the original Hydrow Pro Rower, the Hydrow Wave is shipped in a traditional box delivered via your standard small-parcel carrier. The Hydrow Pro Rower is only available via pallet, which can be troublesome for those living in cityscapes or in an apartment.
The assembly process, according to our testers, takes roughly 30 minutes and can be completed on your own. There is in-home assembly for an additional charge, in which your Hydrow Wave will be delivered by the brand’s network of freight carriers within a four-hour delivery window. In-home assembly includes placement of the rower in your room of choice (including up or down one flight of stairs inside your home), as well as assembly and packaging removal.
Warranties
With the Wave Rower, you’ll receive Hydrow’s Home Use Limited Warranty package. This includes five-year coverage for the structural frame, as well as one-year support for components including the handle, drag strap, and seat assembly. One-year support is also offered for the display and other electronics. Finally, one-year coverage for labor is also included in the deal.
Company Information
Based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hydrow has been manufacturing luxury rowers since 2017 — but they also offer an extensive workout app that covers all aspects of fitness. If you’re unsatisfied with your purchase, you can return your rowing machine within 30 days for a refund. Returns will be charged an additional return shipping fee of $250, which will be deducted from your refund total. To speak to a team member, you can call them at 833-889-3121 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. ET, Monday through Saturday.
In Conclusion
If you’re in need of a compact rowing machine that doesn’t skimp on tech and engaging programming, the Hydrow Wave can be a worthwhile pick. Despite its smaller stature, the Hydrow Wave takes all of the gusto from its larger brethren with a weight capacity of up to 375 pounds. The thermoplastic polymer frame is also plenty stable, even during high-intensity workouts, and also gives you the option to customize your machine’s colorway across the five available options.
When looking for a rowing machine for your space, it’s important to think through your fitness goals and available space. Yes, the Hydrow Wave is our go-to for training in small spaces, but there are no added storage features outside of an add-on vertical storage anchor. Plus, the Hydrow Wave is best used with a subscription to the Hydrow app — if you don’t want to pay the $44 monthly subscription, it may be best to look elsewhere. Still, though, it appears the Hydrow Wave will sit comfortably for months to come as one of our favorite rowers on the market today.
FAQs
What is the difference between the original Hydrow and the Hydrow Wave?
The main difference between the two Hydrow rowing machine silhouettes is the size. The Hydrow Wave measures 80 inches long by 19 inches wide by 43 inches tall, whereas the original Hydrow Pro Rower measures 86 inches long by 25 inches wide by 47 inches tall. Plus, the original Hydrow silhouette features a swiveling screen, which can be beneficial for off-rower workouts available through the Hydrow app.
How much does the Hydrow Wave cost?
The Hydrow Wave retails for $1,695. In addition to this base cost, we recommend pairing the machine to an all-access subscription on the Hydrow app, which will cost $44 monthly. If that’s too rich for your blood, check out our list of the best rowers under $1,000.
Can you use the Hydrow Wave without a subscription?
You can use the Hydrow Wave without a subscription through the profile’s “Just Row” mode, although the experience is far too limited, in our opinion. We do recommend signing up for the digital Hydrow app platform if you plan on adding this compact rower silhouette to your home gym — it’s the easiest way to get the most out of this impressive machine.
