At this point, we think it’s safe to say that Dave Castro’s prediction about the first day at the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games being the hardest is definitely holding true. Last night, the final event of the four event spectacular on day one was announced, and it’s an event that may be called anything but fun.
The Fourth Event for day one of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games is a 42,195 meter marathon row. This event is one of the longest rowing categories one can do for Concept 2’s worldwide rankings. It’s going to be interesting to see how this year’s athletes compare to current Concept 2 World Record holder’s times for this event.
For example on Concept 2’s World Records page, a majority of current male world record holders hit around 2 hours and 30 minutes (for this event), while the women athletes trend closer to 2 hours and 50 minutes. Now, how will CrossFit athletes compare to these times knowing they have a 4-hour time cap on the event?

Below we’ve included the full rundown of events for day one, aka the hardest day of competition ever in the history of the Reebok CrossFit Games.
2018 Reebok CrossFit Games Day 1
So what events make up the hardest day ever in the Reebok CrossFit Games history? Well, let’s just say athletes have all of their athletic pillars covered on this day.
Event 1: Crit
- 10-lap bike race on 1,200 meter course.
Event 2: 30 Muscle-Ups
- 30 Muscle-Ups for time.
Event 3: CrossFit Total
- 1-rep-max back squat
- 1-rep-max shoulder press
- 1-rep-max deadlift
Each lift has three attempts in a 4-minute window, and there’s a 12-minute time cap.
Event 4: Marathon Row
- Complete a 42,195 meter row for time.
What Top Athletes Have Said About CrossFit Games Event 4
Event 4’s announcement came yesterday evening as Castro sat among all of the athletes at their Welcome Dinner. On Castro’s Instagram page, he shared some details on the event and said, “I told you Wednesday would be the hardest day one in history,” [Dave Castro says to the individual athletes at their welcome dinner. Moments before, Castro revealed to athletes that IE4 would be a marathon row. That’s 42,195 meters.]
The description continues with, “This is my ninth Games, and yes, Dave’s right that this will definitely be the toughest day one I’ve seen yet, says @anniethorisdottir. The row alone would probably make it the toughest.”

Thorisdottir isn’t the only athlete who’s publicly said something about the row. On Khan Porter’s Instagram page he wrote, “42,195m row…Is the fourth event of our first day of competition at this year’s @crossfitgames. When @thedavecastro announced the workout I was laughing. I’m not sure exactly why, if it was disbelief or nervous excitement.
Either way after thinking about it, day one is the most excited I’ve ever been for a day of competition. Especially this event. Not for how it will feel physically, that’s going to suck so bad, but for the mental test that finishing the day with a marathon row is going to be.”
Noah Ohlsen also wrote on his Instagram page, “Welllll I’ll be getting real comfortable with this thing!”
Reebok CrossFit Games Event: Fibonacci
Outside of the first day’s Event 4 announcement, another event was quietly released on the CrossFit Games page, and it’s titled “Fibonacci”. This event — as of right now — is set to take place after “The Battleground” on Friday and currently serves as Event 6, but again, this could change. The details for Fibonacci can be seen below.
Fibonacci: 5-8-13 reps
- Handstand push-ups
- Double kettlebell deadlifts
- OH lunge 89 ft.
