Olympians Oleksiy Torokhtiy and Rebeka Koha Teach the Snatch

Say what you want, but we’re firm believers in the fact that there can never be enough exercise tutorials on the internet, especially on the snatch. Sometimes a cue can be explained and demonstrated multiples times before it clicks, and it just takes that one instance of understanding to make a breakthrough to solid progress moving forward.

Factor in that the snatch is an extremely technical movement, it makes sense that sometimes it takes multiple exposures before it’s fully understood by newer strength athletes. And for this reason, that’s why we loved Olympic gold medalist Oleksiy Torokhtiy’s recent beginner snatch tutorial on YouTube with Latvian weightlifter Rebeka Koha.

Torokhtiy (-105kg) won gold in London at the 2012 Olympics and Koha took home fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the -53kg weight class. That’s right, two accomplished Olympians in one weightlifting tutorial video, does it get any better? Even if you have the snatch on lock, it’s always nice seeing a different coach’s takes on performing the movement in different sections.

In the video, Torokhtiy walks through the many steps of establishing the ideal snatch with Koha as the example. The video is 12-minutes long and we highly recommend watching it all the way through, but if you’re crunched on time, then we’ll include a rough table of contents below!

Torokthtiy Beginner Snatch Timeline

  • :18-50-Seconds — Establishing your grip
  • 1-3-Minutes — Finding the correct overhead position
  • 3-4-Minutes — Performing the overhead squat
  • 4-5-Minutes — Muscle snatch & bar path
  • 5-8-Minutes — Second pull, drills, and postures
  • 8:30-10-Minutes — Starting position
  • 10-12-Minutes — Power snatch, full snatch, and snatch balance

Whether you’re a beginner (who this video is said to be for) or an experienced weightlifter, it’s always nice watching the snatch being broke down into multiple parts.
