In the second competition under the new qualification system for the CrossFit Games, familiar faces once again punched their tickets back to Madison. Two-time defending CrossFit Games Champion Tia-Clair Toomey and multi-time podium finisher Patrick Vellner walked away Wodapalooza champions. The stacked ROMWOD/WIT team — featuring a full four individual CrossFit Games veterans — held fast to come away with the overall victory for the Elite teams.
Before it became an officially-sanctioned competition, Miami’s Wodapalooza was already one of the fitness world’s premiere destinations for functional fitness competition, big cash prizes, informational seminars, and product promotion. With CrossFit Games invites on the line for the first time ever, Wodapalooza 2019 carried even more gravitas than normal.
Wodapalooza has long been famous for offering competitions for a variety of fitness levels and abilities, including Youth, Masters, Scaled, and Adaptive divisions.
But this year, more eyes than ever were on the Elite divisions. This was the second of CrossFit’s new Sanctional qualifiers, the first being last month’s Dubai CrossFit Championships. Though CrossFit has clarified that athletes have a variety of paths to qualification — including National Champion invites and at-large bids — winning a Sanctional competition is the most direct means of securing a spot at this summer’s CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin. And some of the sport’s biggest names came to Miami with that singular goal in mind.
After three days of competition in the Elite divisions, the 2019 Wodapalooza podium finishers and their points totals are listed below. Individuals and teams securing spots at the 2019 CrossFit Games are highlighted in bold.
