The Buttery Bros Perform a Deload Session With Noah Ohlsen During His CrossFit Games Prep
The 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games are scheduled for Aug. 3-7, 2022, in Madison, WI. The second Fittest Man on Earth® in 2019, Noah Ohlsen, will return for his ninth consecutive Games appearance in 2022 with the intention of dethroning the reigning Games champion, Justin Medeiros.
On July 13, 2022, the Buttery Bros, Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers, met up with Ohlsen in Miami, FL, to crush pancakes and perform a deload training session consisting of snatch pulls, hang cleans, banded deadlifts, and more. Check it out in the video below, courtesy of the Buttery Bros’ YouTube channel:

Deload Training
Deload training is any session outside one’s routine programming that allows additional recovery time without taking full rest days. This often means deload sessions aren’t as rigorous as typical training days. For elite CrossFit athletes like Ohlsen, “rigorous” is relative. His deload sessions might seem like all-out training sessions to a routine gym goer.
The session opened with three sets of snatch pull triples with 255 pounds. From there, the trio of shredded CrossFitters dove into 135-pound hang cleans, which felt light for Ohlsen.
I would like to go up in weight because it feels so easy. I’m trying to make the smart decision for the long run.
The lightweight, high-intensity session continued with an EMOM (every minute on the minute) of banded deadlifts of 135 pounds. While standing on a resistance band wrapped around the barbell just outside the athletes’ grips, each man cycled through speedy deadlifts with an overhand grip without wearing lifting belts. They finished the indoor portion of the session with back extensions on the GHD machine.

The sunblock came out as Ohlsen and the Buttery Bros went outdoors for the second half of the training session, consisting of two 12-minute EMOMs. They were as follows:
EMOM One
12 minutes of:
- 45-second Row
- 10 Toes-to-Bar
- 10 Strict Pull-Ups
- 30-second L-Sit Hang
EMOM Two
- 45-second Echo Bike
- 10 Strict Press
- 10 Bench Press
- 20-second L-Sit Hold
The 31-year-old Ohlsen suggested that he would compete as an elite Individual for two more years before exploring other options in and out of the CrossFit space. While he didn’t expand on his potential entrepreneurial endeavors, he did say that he would consider moving into the Team or Masters divisions.
Ohlsen’s deload day concluded with a brisk walk on the beach while wearing a weighted Ruck vest, followed by some time in his sauna and ice bath. With less than a month before the Games in Madison, we’ll see if the strategic use of deload training pays off with his first Games title.
