As a lifelong athlete who utilized DIY ice barrel setups during my rugby playing days, I’ll be the first to admit that cold plunging isn’t for the faint of heart.

However, if you’ve never taken a post-workout dip in a tub full of freezing water, you’re missing out on some valuable health and wellness benefits.

Now, I’m not here to convince you that it’s a particularly pleasant experience. In fact, it’s going to take a lot of mental willpower just to survive that bone-chilling initial 15 to 20 seconds.

But if you can manage to quiet your mind, control your breathing, and let the frigid water work its magic, you can get the ball rolling on recovering from your latest training session.

Of course, some of the best cold plunge tubs cost thousands of dollars and can’t be relocated easily. But if affordability and portability are at the top of your priority list, we’ve got you covered.

In this Polar Dive MAX review, I’ll peel back the curtain on a convenient cold plunge system that eliminates those issues entirely. So, if you’re open to the idea of dialing down the temperature and challenging your mind and body to endure a chilly recovery session, it’s time to dive into this review.

Main Takeaways

  • The Polar Dive MAX is a great option if you don’t have the room or budget for a permanent cold plunge tub setup. The inflatable design makes it easy to set up and break down.
  • While the Standard chiller can lower the water temperature to 41 degrees Fahrenheit, upgrading to the Pro chiller allows you to go even colder (39 degrees Fahrenheit) while also providing app control functionality. This is a major convenience factor that’s well worth the extra cost, in our opinion.
  • The inflatable tub accommodates users up to 6 feet, 9 inches tall. The oval shape allows you to stretch your legs out with no restrictions, making it well-suited for longer-limbed individuals who may struggle to find a comfortable fit in a vertical tub like the The Cold Pod.

Who Should Use / Who Shouldn’t Use the Polar Dive MAX

I won’t pretend that a cold plunge tub is for everyone. After all, some people simply have no interest in submerging themselves in freezing water for even a few seconds—let alone minutes.

That being said, the Polar Dive MAX can be a valuable recovery tool for many athletes and exercise enthusiasts. So, if you’re on the fence about whether it’s the right investment, here’s my outlook on who should (and shouldn’t) have it in consideration.

Recommended for:

  • Exercise enthusiasts who want to reduce muscle soreness (1)
  • Budget-conscious buyers who aren’t ready to spend thousands on a premium tub
  • People who need a quick-draining, inflatable tub that can be packed away
  • Small spaces where a permanent cold plunge setup isn’t feasible

Not Recommended for:

  • Anyone looking for a cold plunge tub with dual heating-cooling capabilities
  • Those who prefer a solid tub rather than an inflatable unit
  • People who weigh more than 320 pounds or are taller than 6’9”

Our Experience With the Polar Dive MAX

We tasked two of our in-house experts with putting the Polar Dive MAX through our in-depth equipment testing methodology. Both testers have ample experience using various recovery tools, including saunas and cold plunges. That allowed them to make an apples-to-apples comparison between the Polar Dive MAX tub and similar units.

Right off the bat, we were impressed with how little time it takes to get the tub ready to go.

“It only took about three to five minutes to inflate with the equipment provided,” one tester says. “It was super simple and easy to set up.”

That’s a big plus for busy folks or those who don’t want to deal with a complicated setup process. After all, one of the biggest selling points of an inflatable tub is convenience.

Of course, that’s just the beginning of the cold plunge journey. To give you a better idea of what to expect from your actual experience, I’ll dive into different components of our testing process below.

Footprint and Portability

Measuring 59 inches long, 30 inches wide, and 25 inches high, the tub doesn’t have a particularly large footprint. So, if you’re tight on space, this is definitely a good option.

“It was no bigger than a typical full sized tub, so it wasn’t extremely bulky,” our tester notes.

The Polar Dive MAX doesn’t take up much space, and it deflates for easy storage and portability

Of course, the main advantage of choosing an inflatable tub over a standard, solid one is portability. Fittingly, the Polar Dive MAX earned a rock-solid 4-out-of-5 rating in this category.

“Especially with the ability to take it apart easily, I think it has a good range of places you could put it!” our tester says.

Delivery and Setup

As I touched upon earlier, getting the Polar Dive MAX up and running is a breeze. Our testers gave a near-perfect score of 4.5 out of 5, which should quell any concerns about a complicated setup process.

“I have set up a number of cold tubs throughout my testing and this was by far the easiest chiller to get connected and running,” our tester says. “You had to connect the drain valves to the tub itself, and then the tubing connected to the chiller with pin locks instead of traditional sockets that you have to tighten yourself with a wrench.”

It only took about 5 minutes to inflate the tub using the included hand pump. That’s quite reasonable considering it’s about the same size as a traditional cold plunge tub when fully inflated.

In addition, it took about 27 minutes to fill the tub to the minimum line using a standard garden hose. Our team only had to wait another 15 minutes for it to reach maximum capacity.

Our team did have one minor callout: the labeling for the hoses on the chiller can be a bit confusing.

The chiller unit for the Polar Dive MAX
There’s an easy setup guide for connecting a chiller to your Polar Dive MAX tub

According to our tester—who has plenty of experience assembling all types of cold plunge tubs—most chillers have two connection points. One is usually labeled “water in” and the “water in” label on the tub corresponds accordingly. However, it’s a bit backwards with the Polar Dive MAX, as it’s labeled “water out” on the tub and on the chiller.

To avoid any confusion about how to hook up the hoses correctly, our tester recommends watching this setup tutorial video from Polar Dive’s official YouTube channel.

Construction and Durability

Featuring a military-grade insulated pod (as well as an insulated cover lid), the Polar Dive MAX is quite sturdy.  One of our testers is a 195-pound male who frequently uses these types of recovery tools to stay on top of his game. Having sat in both vertical and horizontal tubs made from different materials, he was pleasantly surprised at the sturdiness of this inflatable model.

Our product tester climbs into the Polar Dive MAX
There’s no need to worry about this inflatable tub, the Polar Dive MAX is incredibly sturdy

“I was able to lean into it and dive in full-body first, then after a few minutes, I went just lower body, and there was no structural change,” he explains.

Meanwhile, the Polar Dive Water Chiller—which, like the tub, is built for indoor and outdoor use—is an energy efficient unit that features a 20-micron filter to keep the water clean and clear. Capable of cooling the water to 39 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s fairly lightweight, tipping the scales at 40 pounds. For comparison, the chiller on the Sun Home Cold Plunge (another inflatable tub) weighs a whopping 88 pounds!

“The structure is so solid that it almost makes you forget that it’s inflated, especially because it keeps the temperature and it feels just like a regular tub,” our tester says.

That rigidity (which is a good thing) stems from using the same high-quality drop-stitch PVC used for inflatable paddleboards and other high-strength inflatable structures. This provides a sturdy feel once it’s fully inflated as opposed to the softness usually associated with inflatables.

Ergonomics

Let’s face it: No one wants to sit in a cold tub that’s uncomfortable.

Luckily, you don’t have to worry about that with the Polar Dive MAX.

“I am 5-foot-9, and I was able to go all the way down to my shoulders. There’s plenty of room for someone much taller,” says one of our testers. “They might need to kick their legs further down, but it gives the right amount of height so it feels like a normal tub.”

Our tester in the Polar Dive MAX cold plunge
Our tester in the Polar Dive MAX cold plunge

That being said, we do wish this tub featured specific places to rest your head or arms inside the tub. Some tubs even feature built-in seating, but that’s not the case here.

Still, our tester says the Polar Dive MAX is “as comfortable as you can get” and “sturdier than expected”  for being an inflatable unit.

App Controls

Let me be clear: a two-degree temperature difference isn’t the reason you should upgrade to the Pro chiller.

The extra dough  gets you something that’s incredibly valuable: app compatibility.

The completely free Polar Dive App paves the way for convenience by allowing you to control the chiller temperature from your fingertips. Furthermore, you can even schedule your plunges ahead of time—a huge benefit for busy folks who don’t want to waste precious minutes waiting once they get home from work or the gym.

Even our testers, both of whom have used apps with other tubs, found the Polar Dive experience to be truly unique.

“The app has a ton of cool features, which is a big difference from other cold tub apps I’ve seen,” notes one of our testers. “Typically, they only let you control the chiller from here. However, this one integrates with your Apple Health, Whoop, or Garmin. It has the ability to create a plunge schedule for you, and even has an AI agent that you can use to find out so much more information about cold plunging in general.

In addition to controlling the temperature and scheduling sessions, the app also provides progress tracking. Again, this is something that separates the Polar Dive App from other platforms.

“It can tell you about your recovery metrics, give you breathing techniques, and even the scientific benefits of your recovery,” our tester says. “It reminds me of Strava [a metric tracking app for runners and cyclists] for cold plunging, though it seems like you need to accumulate a lot of data before receiving actionable recommendations.”

Draining and Cleaning

Finally, when you’re done with your session and want to put the Polar Dive MAX away, you can look forward to a stress-free draining and cleaning experience. Our team rated this a perfect 5 out of 5.

“It’s super easy to wipe down. It did get dirty easily since it’s black and you can see it right away, but that’s nothing a wet cloth can’t handle!” our tester says. “Draining is also really easy since you install a drain valve right onto the tub at the bottom. You can turn it on and let the water run out, and once it gets light enough you can just tip the tub over to get the excess water out.”

That isn’t always the case with standard tubs that can easily tip the scales at 100+ pounds. So, we certainly appreciate that the Polar Dive tub only weighs 15 pounds when empty.

As for how long it’ll take to go from full to empty? According to our testers, it only took 15 minutes to completely drain the Polar Max DIVE using a standard 4,600 GPH (gallons per hour) water pump.

What to Consider Before Buying the Polar Dive MAX

As is the case with any health and wellness tool, it’s important to take a step back and assess whether it’s truly the right investment before you take the plunge (sorry, I couldn’t resist!).

Here are some factors to keep in mind as you make your decision about the Polar Dive MAX.

  • Do you want app controls and more insights into your cold plunge sessions? If so, the price difference between the Standard and Pro chillers is worth it.
  • How much does durability matter? While we were impressed with the sturdiness of this inflatable tub, a traditional solid tub will likely last longer due to its solid construction.
  • Do you want heating capabilities, too? If so, you’ll need to look elsewhere, as Polar Dive chillers are strictly built for cooling down.

Polar Dive MAX Vs. Competitors

As the cold plunge market continues to expand, you have more options at your disposal. While our team was impressed with the Polar Dive MAX, it’s certainly not the only inflatable tub worth looking into.

However, let me warn you: You’ll have to expand your budget quite a bit.

While the Polar Dive MAX (without a chiller) checks in at around the $1,000 mark, two of our other favorite inflatable tubs are on the pricier side.

The Plunge Air is a premium inflatable tub made with a weather-resistant material for indoor and outdoor use. Naturally, it earned a perfect portability score from our team, with our testing noting, “The included backpack easily fits the tub, as well as the accompanying pump.”

Unfortunately, this model doesn’t accommodate taller users like the Polar Dive MAX. So, if you’re over 6 feet, 2 inches tall, you may want to look elsewhere.

If that’s the case, the Sun Home Cold Plunge is a viable alternative. At 77 inches long, it has more than enough space for tall individuals to stretch out comfortably. In fact, this tub earned a perfect ergonomics score during testing.

“I can completely extend my body in the tub,” our tester says. “The sides are comfortable enough to keep my arms resting above the water, too.”

Of course, the proverbial elephant in the room is the price. Unlike the budget-oriented Polar Dive MAX, the Sun Home Cold Plunge carries a hefty price tag of $4,099. However, using Sun Home Saunas discount codes can allow you to secure this well-built cold plunge tub system at a more reasonable price.

Places to Buy the Polar Dive MAX

You can purchase the Polar Dive MAX directly from the manufacturer’s website. Once you’re on the product page, you can select your preferred tub (Pod, Pro, or Max). Then, you can select which chiller you want (or stick with just the tub).

Polar Dive USA offers promotional sales and discounts throughout the year, so you may be able to score additional savings. For example, at the time of writing, the company was offering a free two-year extended warranty and free ice bath cleaning kit with the purchase of any tub.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Polar Dive MAX is HSA/FSA-eligible, meaning you can use pre-tax dollars to help fund your purchase. Plus, you can finance the tub through Affirm, which allows you to spread the total cost out over more manageable installments.

Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews

The Polar Dive MAX has earned an average score of 4.9 out of 5 stars based on 262 reviews on the company website. Many customers highlight the easy setup process, consistent temperature, and overall build quality of both the tub and the chiller.

Final Thoughts on the Polar Dive MAX

The Polar Dive MAX cold plunge tub is a budget-friendly alternative to higher-priced systems that may take up more room and are much more difficult to move. Whether you want to take it on the go or just be able to take it down when you’re not using it, the inflatable design adds a layer of convenience.

“You can see other cold tubs range high into the thousands with their chillers included and this seems reasonable for anyone thinking of getting into the cold tub recovery space,” one of our testers says.

So, if you’re looking for a low-cost (relatively speaking) way to upgrade your recovery game, our team is confident the Polar Dive MAX can get the job done.

How long should an ice bath or cold plunge session last?

As a certified personal trainer and lifelong athlete, I recommend starting with two-minute sessions so you can get acclimated to the cold plunge experience. For me, the ideal window is three to five minutes, though some people will stay submerged for up to 10 minutes (2).

Can I use the Polar Dive MAX for contrast therapy?

While some chillers offer heating and cooling capabilities for contrast therapy, the Polar Dive MAX does not.
