Four weeks after Hafthor Björnsson broke the deadlift world record, he appears poised to do it again. Björnsson, who will compete at the 2025 World Deadlift Championships (WDC) in Birmingham, England, on Sept. 6, capped a recent training session with a 460-kilogram double.
Björnsson approached the barbell wearing a deadlift suit and a weight belt. He connected to the bar with figure-eight straps and established his stance. He rolled the barbell toward his shins and initiated the lift. After locking out his first rep, he returned the barbell to the floor, paused, and ascended his second rep nearly as quickly as the first.
For perspective on the magnitude of this set, Benedikt Magnusson set the world record for this lift with 460 kilograms in 2011 before he bumped it by one kilogram in 2014. Eddie Hall advanced the record to 463 kilograms in 2015 before famously increasing it by 35 kilograms to 500 kilograms in 2016.
Less than 15 years after Magnusson’s world record was achieved, Björnsson lifted it for a double. Björnsson is the current all-time world record deadlift holder at 505 kilograms.
The 2018 World’s Strongest Man champion wrote that his 460-kilogram double was a personal best. He called his shot for England, intending to break the deadlift record again.
