Having plenty of experience with the iFIT platform, I scored the dynamic programming at 5 out of 5.

Another big perk that comes from the Commercial R35’s iFIT integration is the automatic trainer control feature. While I haven’t experienced this tech atop this particular recumbent bike, I can attest to its seamless operation on other bikes, like the NordicTrack Commercial S22i exercise bike. It makes focusing on your workout progress a breeze and especially comes in handy when taking in a real-world ride through the Google Maps module — no need to adjust on your own for rolling hills or steep climbs.

We also scored the available tech at 4 out of 5 for the Bluetooth audio capabilities. The Commercial R35 pairs easily to your wireless earbuds, which can be great for keeping sounds and audio to yourself during training. Be mindful, though, that the Bluetooth tech is only audio focused. The Commercial R35 does not feature the brand’s ActivePulse technology, meaning you cannot pair your heart rate monitor to the machine for more accurate data collection.

I’ll also note that while the NordicTrack Commercial R35 does feature a manual training mode, its true potential is unlocked after subscribing to the iFIT platform. Be sure to account this extra $39 monthly charge into your budget before adding this impressive recumbent bike to your cart.

Lower Maneuverability

While the NordicTrack Commercial R35 features a plethora of bells and whistles for training needs, we rated the portability at 3.75 out of 5 given its more robust silhouette. While maneuvering a recumbent bike into position isn’t an easy task regardless of your brand of choice, we still would have appreciated less of a challenge when trying to get this machine from one corner to the next.

“For one, the weight itself makes the R35 a difficult machine to move for one person,” stated our tester. “Plus, there isn’t a handlebar located at the back base. This made it harder to actually control the machine once I broke the balance point and had the weight resting on the front transport wheels.”

Granted, the R35 is more maneuverable than other commercial-grade equipment we’ve trialed in the past. However, this could be a detriment to athletes looking to train in smaller spaces or those in the process of moving between homes. We recommend having a helper on hand when trying to move this recumbent bike, especially if your route entails any stairs or inclines.

While recumbent bikes like the Commercial R35 can be beneficial for those with joint, back, or balance issues, Capritto notes that more strenuous workout disciplines can be more beneficial for able-bodied athletes. “I do encourage people who can ride a normal exercise bike to do so, as the overall health and fitness benefits are greater,” she states. “Typical positioning of the body on an exercise bike recruits more muscle engagement from the hamstrings and glutes and reinforces hip and spinal mobility and core stability.”

We also recommend a different stationary bike if you’re looking to perform high-intensity interval training that engages the whole body. Your positioning atop a recumbent bike isolates your legs to perform all the work, meaning there’s no engagement from your hips up. While you can still get your sweat on with a recumbent bike, those looking for full-body training should instead opt for a rowing machine, elliptical, or other home gym essential.

Both offer over 20 different magnetic resistance levels. However, the Commercial R35 wins out due to its iFIT integration and auto-adjusting features — Sole does not offer comparable streaming services across its 10.1-inch touchscreen. The Sole LCR is also roughly $300 more.

Next, the 5.0R from Horizon Fitness features a smaller, more maneuverable silhouette thanks to its 87-pound frame and front transport wheels. We also like the 100 levels of resistance and five preset workout programs, making this a great recumbent bike for beginner athletes. While the near-$500 savings can be worthwhile for some, we still favor the more engaging workout experience provided through the 14-inch touchscreen of the NordicTrack Commercial R35.

Finally, the Schwinn 230 — which we’ve previously ranked as one of the best recumbent bikes for seniors — boasts a lower price point, smaller footprint, and lighter frame than the Commercial R35. That said, the 230 features fewer resistance levels, and the more basic LCD display is incapable of supporting streaming services.
