The rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games closing ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 5, 2021. However, the four days of Para powerlifting competition that spanned from Aug. 26-30, 2021 are complete and the podium finishers for all 20 weight categories have received their medals. The highlight finishes of the Games were two world records and seven Paralympic records.
Guo Lingling of China scored the first world record in Para powerlifting at the Games in the 41-kilogram class. Her 109-kilogram bench press on her fourth attempt did not count as her official best lift but was deemed a world record. Her third attempt of 108-kilograms was a full 10 kilograms more than silver medalist Ni Nengah Widiasih’s 98-kilogram bench press.
The other world record was hit by Folashade Oluwafemiayo of Nigeria in the Women’s 86-kilogram class. Oluwafemiayo racked up four successful attempts including a 151-kilogram lift for gold. Her fourth attempt tacked on an additional kilogram and now stands as both the Paralympic and world record.
